As ABC’s Scandal enters its final season, the show’s star Kerry Washington is assuring audiences that the show will go out with a bang. Fans of the long-running Shonda Rhimes series are wondering how the mastermind behind Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away With Murder plans to end her popular political thriller.

For six seasons, viewers have been watching Washington’s Olivia Pope as she navigates her way through the hairiness of White House politics and major administrative crises. Some of the crises were admittedly caused by Olivia herself, as the series’ titular scandal refers to the character’s affair with President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). With one final season to go, there are sure to be plenty of the fireworks that the show has become famous for throughout its run.

At a press junket for the upcoming Pixar sequel Cars 3, Screen Rant was able to briefly speak to Washington about the Scandal series finale. Washington assured us that the show will not go out quietly:

SR: Real quick, what can you tell me about the next season of Scandal?

KERRY WASHINGTON: Nothing! I can’t tell you anything because I don’t know. All I can tell you is that it is going to be our last season, so I know that our writers are going to go for broke. You know, we’ve been groundbreaking from the beginning and I’m sure we will be until the end. I know that everybody’s excited to go big, and then go home, so people are really, really, really committed to making this season one of our best.

Season 6 of Scandal premiered in January 2017, lasting only 16 episodes rather than the usual 22 due to Washington’s pregnancy. The series was picked up for season 7 in early February, with confirmation coming that it would be the final season coming last month.

While specific details regarding the show’s final season have yet to emerge, it seems like the creative team behind Scandal want to satisfy fans with the same shocking twists and turns that made the show into a ratings-juggernaut in the first place. Throughout its run, Scandal has averaged 10 million viewers per night, with huge jumps to 12 million during the prime of seasons 3 and 4.

Rhimes, Washington and the rest of the crew seem determined to make sure to end the series before things wear out their welcome. Seven seasons seems like a good time to end a show as soap operatic and dramatically-exhausting as Scandal, particularly when looking at how long Shonda’s Grey’s Anatomy has been running and how many of the original stars have jumped ship on that medical drama.

Scandal’s final season premieres this fall.
