Capcom’s first Resident Evil video game was released in 1996, and since then it’s turned into a wildly successful international franchise. Growing beyond only video games, the series now includes countless sequels and remakes, movies, comic books, and much more.

The Resident Evil franchise has always given players tons of grotesque and shocking enemies to test out their skills against, and most these monsters have only appeared to get more disgusting as video game technology progresses. With clearer graphics and smoother gameplay than ever before, Resident Evil 3 Remake’s April 2020 release was unsurprisingly a huge success.

Not all enemies are created equally in the Resident Evil franchise. Some are silly and far-fetched, whereas others leave players with chills sent up their spines. If one thing is for sure, however, it’s that the series has set the bar high in terms of monster design for future remakes and sequels.

What Makes A Resident Evil Monster Scary

Resident Evil has produced some downright terrifying enemies over the years, proving that ‘scary’ can come in all shapes and forms. Perhaps the answer to what results in the scariest monster is a personal question, as not everyone is as scared or impressed by the same terrifying features, let alone to the same degree, but it’s hard not to shudder at the sight of most of the ghoulish designs that have emerged from the franchise.

Razor-sharp teeth and claws, multiple heads, and ungodly long tongues are common elements found in some of the creepiest Resident Evil enemies, but the fact that some monsters can sneak up behind players with no warning (or at least with little time to move) also adds a frightening element that goes beyond the aesthetically disgusting appearance of many of the enemies. It also makes it all the more disturbing when a character has an emotionally-charged backstory, with Marguerite Baker from Resident Evil 7 coming first to mind.

Resident Evil’s Most Frightening Designs Ever

Players who find Texas Chainsaw Massacre disturbing will likely agree that Chainsaw Man (formerly Dr. Salvador) is one of the scariest enemies players will encounter in Resident Evil 4 and 5. He may not be the most supernatural-looking character, but the sound of the chainsaw’s buzz creeping up behind players is enough to give anyone nightmares. It doesn’t help that Chainsaw Man’s kills are particularly stomach-churning and violent, usually ending with a player’s decapitation.

Tongues can be pretty gross, especially when they’re the size of a creature’s entire body, making lickers one of the ickiest characters in the Resident Evil 2 remake. Be careful, as these enemies will dart towards their prey and use their frog-like tongues to reel players in. Zombie dogs are another animal-like enemy that will give players nightmares. Seeing these vicious creatures on the screen is enough to turn the craziest of dog people into cat lovers.

Finally, a Scagdead may be rare, but it’s lethal. Appearing in Resident Evil: Revelations as well as its sequel, beware of this enemy’s two-headed form and piercing teeth, as one puncture can be the end. Perhaps the most chilling part of this is that Scagdeads will repeat what the person said right before they succumbed to the infection, making this enemy particularly disturbing.

The aforementioned are some of the scariest (and down-right grossest) enemies to confront players in the Resident Evil games, and it’s likely that players will be introduced to even more chilling enemies in the future.
