Wanda Maximoff (aka The Scarlet Witch) had perhaps the most dramatic initiation of any Avenger Avengers: Age of Ultron. After getting stuck on the floating city of Sokovia, Wanda nearly had a total breakdown, hid in a crumbling building, and had to be talked down by Hawkeye. Informing Wanda that if she walked out the door, “you are an Avenger,” the archer went out to face down an entire army of Ultron robots. Just as all hope seemed lost, the Scarlet Witch emerged, and used her powers to tear apart the robots with her mind, even ripping out Ultron’s heart at one point.

One would suspect that with that much power at her beck and call that the Scarlet Witch would have a similar dramatic entrance in the comic books. Yet, surprisingly, all Wanda had to do when she originally joined the Avengers was… read a newspaper.

In Avengers #16, writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby decided to shake things up by changing virtually the entire Avengers roster. Although the team originally consisted of Thor, Ant-Man/Giant-Man, the Wasp, Iron Man, and the Hulk, it regularly changed its lineup when the Hulk left in the second issue and Captain America joined up a few issues later. By the sixteenth issue, however, Lee and Kirby decided to toss out all the heroes save Captain America and introduce their readers to an entirely different team.

To make things even more controversial, the new team members were all former villains. While he may be considered an Avengers’ mainstay at this point, the archer Hawkeye was originally an enemy of Iron Man before he reformed and decided to try his hand at super heroics. Likewise, Quicksilver and his sister the Scarlet Witch were originally introduced as members of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants before they became disillusioned with the Master of Magnetism and went off on their own.

Their path took them to an isolated Swiss chalet “halfway around the Earth” until Quicksilver came across a newspaper article indicating that the Avengers were looking for other applicants to replace team members. Believing this could be a chance to show the world they could be heroes and not just villains, Quicksilver urged Wanda to join the team with him. For her part, Wanda was reluctant, but agreed to follow Quicksilver’s lead since he was older than her (since they were twins, the age difference was still measured by a matter of minutes).

Wanda didn’t even have to really apply to be an Avenger – Quicksilver just wrote to Tony Stark, expressing his interest, and the two flew to America where they were immediately accepted into the team. Although Quicksilver gave the media a demonstration of his superhuman speed, the Scarlet Witch didn’t even have to use her hex powers (which were admittedly poorly defined near the beginning of her superhero career).

Much of this had to do with the fact that the Scarlet Witch – although now accepted as one of Marvel’s most powerful superhumans – began as basically a token female in a male-dominated superhero world. Wanda’s main function in the issue was to literally smile for the news cameras when the Avengers introduced their new roster to the world. Later storylines, particularly “House of M” and “Decimation” would show readers just how devastating Scarlet Witch’s magic could be, but in her original appearance, she was basically just a girl in tights and a cape.
