Scarlet Witchs Secret Weapon is Too Ridiculous For the MCU

Warning! This article contains spoilers for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4

The astonishing powers wielded by Scarlet Witch grant her the ability to twist and change all of reality whether she means to or not which has been translated elegantly from the comics to live-action, but one secret weapon just revealed in Marvel Comics is far too ridiculous for any movie or show. Scarlet Witch’s reality manipulation powers have reshaped the Marvel Universe more than once, from the fake utopia she created in House of M to the depowering of most of mutantkind on M-Day. Wanda Maximoff’s latest attack on the mutants proved to be one of the greatest threats they have faced in some time, but it is just too wild for a live-action adaptation.

In X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4 by Leah Williams, Lucas Werneck, and David Messina, Wanda makes a stunning return from the dead after the Five resurrect her against the wishes of the Quiet Council. Magneto was greatly suspected of murdering Wanda at the Hellfire Gala, a crime he vehemently denied, which launched the mysterious storyline. Upon Wanda’s return, however, she was missing key portions of her life since her consciousness backup within cerebro was old, meaning there were pieces of her consciousness still lost outside of her mortal form. The mentally-incomplete Wanda caused her fractured consciousness great distress, which manifested in a physical threat impacting the mutants on Krakoa.

Seemingly out of nowhere after Scarlet Witch reveals she has been resurrected, the Island of Krakoa is attacked by an army of Kaiju. The X-Men and the Avengers, who were invited onto Krakoa to collect Scarlet Witch’s body out of respect for their fallen comrade, sprung into action to fight the giant monsters. Meanwhile, on the astral plane, the remainder of Scarlet Witch’s consciousness is having a discussion with itself manifested as an older version of Wanda. Eventually, every version of Scarlet Witch’s mind reconnects in her physical body, giving her the clarity to stop her inadvertent Kaiju invasion and fully return to the Marvel Universe after her brief yet shocking departure.

The idea of Scarlet Witch creating an army of Kaiju is just a little too far-fetched to be adapted by the MCU, especially after fans saw how the studio is portraying her powers in live-action. Wanda’s reality manipulation is mostly centered around people’s perception of reality rather than reality itself as shown in WandaVision. Wanda was able to brainwash the residents of a whole town, the structure of which constantly changed depending on the era of T.V. shows she was emulating. Her powers are much more subtle, making them that much more effective and terrifying. If the MCU decided to give Wanda the power to manifest Kaiju out of nowhere then they may prove to stretch Scarlet Witch a little too thin for fans to stomach.

Even though her latest comic feat might be a little too ridiculous for the movies, it was still an epic moment for comic book fans and was a creative move on the part of Williams, Werneck, and Messina. The comic writer and artists pushed the boundaries of Wanda’s powers in the most epic fashion. Few things are more exciting than an army of superheroes fighting giant monsters, and that was brought to life while exploring the deep emotional turmoil Wanda was going through after being murdered. While a great idea with fantastic execution in the comics, Scarlet Witch’s secret weapon is just too ridiculous for any movie.
