The role of a custodian is a thankless one, but there is so much more to the job than roaming the halls in a jumpsuit with a squeaky cart full of cleaning supplies. The twilight world of a janitor is almost beyond description for those who do not inhabit it.

Custodians know the inner workings of a building better than anyone else and because of that, they can get into all sorts of wacky hijinks behind-the-scenes. The world of fiction has taken the occupation to a whole new space in the realms of film and television. Let’s take a look at some of the most notable ones that run the gamut — from The Simpsons to A Nightmare on Elm Street.

10 Janitor (Scrubs)

Neil Flynn’s iconic performance as Sacred Heart’s mysterious and prank-happy custodian will remain with audiences forever. Whether he’s messing with Zach Braff’s J.D. or finding love with Kit Pongetti’s Lady, the Janitor was always there to remind us that fun times can always be found in a hospital. Fun fact: the Janitor appeared in the 1993 Harrison Ford film, The Fugitive.

9 Groundskeeper Willie (The Simpsons)

Like Jack Torrance of The Shining fame, the irascible Scotsman of Springfield Elementary (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) is a loose canon. His tolerance for children is almost non-existent, but his devotion to the job is bar none.

If Willie needs to be coated in Lunchlady Doris’ grease so that he can maneuver his way through a tight air-duct, he’ll do it, no questions asked.

8 God (Bruce Almighty)

You have to love a janitor who not only cleans a building, but your soul as well. When Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) meets a kindly old janitor wearing a Yankees cap (Morgan Freeman), he thinks nothing of it. That is until the down-on-his-luck journalist realizes that he’s standing in the presence of the Almighty. Near the end of the film, Bruce comes to learn that small acts, such as mopping a floor, can be just as powerful as divine ones.

7 Argus Filch (Harry Potter)

Let’s be honest — Filch (David Bradley), along with his beloved pet cat, Mrs. Norris, isn’t the nicest dude around. In fact, he’s downright unpleasant, but he’s about the only person at Hogwarts who gives a hoot about cleanliness and order. Whenever a cauldron explodes, he’ll be there. Whenever Peeves dumps water balloons on students’ heads, he’ll be there. Whenever Fred and George create a miniature swamp in one of the corridors, he won’t be able to do anything about it because he’s a Squib, but he’ll still be there.

6 Elisa Esposito (The Shape of Water)

She doesn’t utter one word of dialogue, but the heroine of Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War romance proved that not every relationship needs to have verbal communication in order to go the distance. Elisa (played by Sally Hawkins) also proved that cleaning up the messes at a top-secret government installation in Baltimore may just net you a once-in-a-lifetime bond with a deadly fish/man hybrid.

5 Gordy (Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide)

Kids who came of age in the early 2000s will remember just how cool Gordy (Daran Norris) was in Ned’s. He was more of a fun-loving student than he was a janitor and whenever there was a mess to clean up at the end of the day, he was always happy to “let the night guy get it.” In addition, his immortal battle against the school’s resident weasel — in reality, just a cheap hand puppet — kept viewers on their toes for the show’s three season run.

4 Melvin (The Toxic Avenger)

Perhaps the most ironic janitor of all time, the grotesquely oozing protagonist of the 1984 cult classic once mopped floors…now he mops up crime. The titular hero was played by three different people: Mark Torgl as Melvin; Mitch Cohen as the physical Toxic Avenger; and Kenneth Kessler as the voice of Toxic Avenger

3 Charlie Kelly (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia)

It’s easy to write off Charlie Kelly (played by Charlie Day) as a crazy oddball, but if the Season 10 episode of “Charlie Work” — a tribute to the one-shot nature of Alejandro G.

Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance — taught us anything, it’s that the milk steak-loving character keeps Paddy’s Pub up and running every single day.

2 Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street)

The dream-invading antagonist created by Wes Craven isn’t great with kids, but at least he knows his way around a boiler room, right? While he didn’t start out as a custodian, Freddy was framed as a preschool groundskeeper in the 2010 remake, where he was portrayed by Jackie Earle Haley. That said, the knife-fingered villain (made famous by the legendary Robert Englund) indirectly cemented his status as a janitorial icon via his dingy, pipe-filled domain from the very first movie. However, it should be noted that the famous location was, according to Marge Thompson, a reflection of an abandoned boiler room where Freddy would take his victims, and where he was ultimately burned alive.

1 Jack Torrance (The Shining)

All he had to do was take care of the Overlook Hotel for one winter, but the evil spirits within the resort’s walls drove him mad. Whether you’re a fan of the Stephen King novel or the Stanley Kubrick film (where Jack is played by Jack Nicholson), you can still agree that if you’re a hotel hiring manager and the name “Torrance” shows up on an application, it’s probably a good idea to not give them the gig.
