Remakes are very common within the modern gaming industry and Nintendo is responsible for its fair share of them. Case in point: the more recent release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD which only just arrived on the Wii U last September. Building off of that, it came as no surprise when the Big N announced that remakes of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire would be arriving on the 3DS by the year’s end under the banners of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

While the prospect of such a highly anticipated pair of remakes is tantalizing to longtime fans and newcomers alike, one prolific feature that originally debuted in the Game Boy Advance originals was the ability to build secret bases. Aside from being able to completely customize each area with Poke-themed dolls and furniture, these secret bases allowed players to continuously interact with CPU-controlled versions of their friends even when they weren’t in the same area. It was easily a standout aspect of the original Ruby and Sapphire and it’ll now officially be returning in the 3DS iterations.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will feature a revamped version of the aforementioned secret bases, aptly rebranded as Super Secret Bases, and they’ve been completely integrated into the 3DS hardware. These nature-themed domiciles still be setup in the tried and true fashion that they were in previous games (via a Pocket Monster that’s equipped with the move Secret Power), but there are a handful of new options that trainers have once the base has been established.

First and foremost, players still have the ability to completely decorate their ‘Super Secret Base’ with a number of different dressings and goodies, but it’s the ability to share custom bases with others that’s truly been revamped. Making full use of the updated tech featured within Nintendo’s 3DS, wannabe Pokemon Masters can now add the locations of their friends’ bases or share their own utilizing StreetPass. Those looking to add their faraway friends, however, can send each other QR codes of their respective bases.

Once a friend or random stranger has been added to the game, they can be added to a group called ‘Secret Pals’. Once these downloaded avatars accompany the player back to their respective base, they’ll bestow different abilities upon the trainer. The main appeal of these characters is the ability to battle them at anytime, which is still possible, but now they can also make eggs hatch sooner, raise the level of your Pokemon, or give gamers new items for their base. Players can also capture flags from their friends’ bases to increase their fort’s overall rank, which in turns unlocks more abilities from their Secret Pals.

Lastly, players can actually turn their bases into their own personal Gyms — in which they take on the role of a Gym Leader. Fans can customize whether or not they’ll participate in double or single bouts, but details are still lacking in terms of just what being a Gym Leader entails.

It sounds as if Game Freak is really going all out to ensure that the return of secret bases is a worthwhile one, and the sheer amount of upgrades to the feature demonstrates just how dedicated the developer is to making Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as grandiose as possible.
