WWE Films may put out a lot of turkeys, but their slasher film franchise See No Evil, starring towering wrestler Kane, is quite underrated. For over 20 years, Glenn Jacobs demolished the competition as demonic WWE titan Kane, otherwise known as The Big Red Machine. Brother to equally dominant supernatural character The Undertaker, Kane was one of the most consistent performers in the company, able to excite fans as both a fiendish villain and butt-kicking avenger. He also liked to occasionally set people on fire, so there’s that.
Nowadays, Jacobs spends his time in the world of politics, serving as mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. Back when WWE decided to kick off their new film company with a horror flick though, they made the entirely logical decision to have Kane star in it. Although, he’s not the Kane character, instead Jacobs plays a bruising slasher named Jacob Goodnight, who sports the terrifying signature of removing his victim’s eyes. He’s no Daniel Day Lewis as an actor, but since he’s basically playing a version of Kane, Jacobs makes Goodnight memorable.
While See No Evil more than doubled its small budget at the box office, it took almost a decade for a sequel, See No Evil 2, to materialize, going direct to video. Neither film really got much respect when released, but anyone who loves slashers needs to check them out.
See No Evil: Why WWE’s Slasher Movie Franchise Is Underrated
One of the best things about the See No Evil movies are that they in some ways harken back to the slashers of the 1980s. There’s a bit of nudity and sexual content, bad language, and most importantly, some quite gory and harsh kills. See No Evil and its sequel are unapologetically R-rated, and that’s a great thing for a mainstream slasher made after 2000 to be, even if they fall short of being as sleazy as the 1980s golden age. There’s also Kane himself as Jacob, whose physical stature and harsh voice make him one of the most imposing slashers ever. He also comes complete with a suitably macabre origin story, having been driven to murder by his religiously domineering mother.
While Jacob is seemingly killed at the end of See No Evil, like any good slasher, he returns somehow for another round of killing in a sequel. Kane is just as fun to watch work, and the sequel benefits from great casting, and the direction of indie darlings Jen and Sylvia Soska, who had previously helmed the excellent American Mary. That film’s star, Katharine Isabelle, is part of the See No Evil 2 cast, as is fellow horror favorite Danielle Harris. More brutal kills are staged, and it’s arguably an even stronger film. To be clear, neither See No Evil will ever be mistaken for high art, but there’s no reason slasher movie lovers shouldn’t book a date with Jacob Goodnight.
