Sex And The City often seems like it introduces a new relationship every episode – after all, the series is about sex and dating in New York – but that naturally leads to a whole lot of break ups, and not all of them can be for good reasons. Most of the time, Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Sam were on the receiving end of this ridiculousness, and it would lead to lots of commiserations over cocktails, but they did their fair share of dumping for eyebrow-raising reasons, too.

Whether it was something small and petty, or one of the more problematic episodes of the show, there are plenty of breakups on Sex and the City that just left fans shaking their heads.

10 Steve Left Miranda For Earning More Than Him

Steve and Miranda may end up a (relatively) happy couple, but they have some serious ups and downs, and this particular down was incredibly frustrating to watch. Steve, at this point, is a bartender, and Miranda is a lawyer, so she (unsurprisingly) earns more than him. However, he struggles to deal with this, and ends up leaving her when she tries to buy him a suit. The idea that a woman out-earning a man makes him ‘less’ – which is what is going on here – is false and toxic, and it was devastating to see their happy relationship end over something like who makes more money.

9 Charlotte Dumps Mike Over Circumcision

Charlotte is definitely the most sheltered of the women on Sex and the City, and is often utterly shocked by fairly benign things, sexually speaking – but the most ridiculous reason she has for leaving someone is that they weren’t circumcised. In this storyline, Mike is actually willing to get a circumcision as an adult to please her (something that, had the genders been reversed, would have been an unthinkable storyline), but then decides that he doesn’t want to settle down. It is technically Mike who dumps Charlotte, but she essentially forced things to end when she decided he had to have surgery to ‘fix’ his perfectly functional genitals. This is definitely one of Charlotte’s worst moments (and fans were happy to see Mike move on).

8 Carrie Left Big For Refusing To Say ‘I Love You’

A slightly more controversial breakup, Carrie first ends things with Big because he isn’t moving fast enough for her. He won’t ‘define the relationship’, introduce her to his mother as his girlfriend, or say ‘I love you’. And rather than have a calm and respectful conversation about that, Carrie dumps him. Some might argue that she was in the right, as he wasn’t willing to create a relationship they both wanted, but for most, this feels like more of a typical Carrie overreaction to someone wanting to slow things down.

7 Berger Left Carrie For Being More Successful Than Him

Berger has some clear issues, and a huge part of that is in the infamous ‘post it’ breakup, when he essentially leaves Carrie because she is more successful as a writer than he is.

Insecurity, comparison, and an inability to celebrate her success is a truly ridiculous reason to end a relationship that was otherwise pretty decent. And of course, the way he did it was appalling.

6 Sam Left Maria For Talking Too Much

Samantha’s storyline with Maria is often criticized, not for the relationship itself, per se, but for the fact that Samantha appears to be bi for a quick moment, and then her sexuality is never discussed again and she only dates men otherwise. It’s a frustrating situation, and this is even more frustrating considering that she essentially ends the relationship because Maria talks too much, and she just wants ‘a man’ who will have more sex and fewer conversations. The gender assumptions in this breakup are definitely one of the (many) things that didn’t age well for the series.

5 Miranda Left Tom For Going Down On Her

This is one of the most ridiculous reasons to end a good relationship on the series – Miranda, who connects with Tom at a weight watchers meeting, essentially ends things because he enjoys performing oral sex. For most women, this would be a definite positive trait in a man, but Miranda is disgusted by what is left on his face when he is done. Then, to add to that, Tom cannot handle anything that even sounds like criticism around ‘eating’ (even if, presumably, sex and actual food consumption would be different things) and breaks things off rather than, say, starting to keep a towel near the bed. The entire episode is over the top and almost unbelievable.

4 Samantha Left James Because Of His Size

Another storyline that doesn’t age well, Samantha briefly dates – and falls in love with – James, before leaving him for having a small penis.

It’s a kind of body shaming that just doesn’t hold up, especially as someone as adventurous and experienced as Samantha would surely be able to find a way to have a great time with her lover no matter what his size.

3 Carrie Dumped Sean For Being Bi

Of all the reasons to end a relationship that no longer hold up, Carrie’s decision to end things with Sean has to be one of the worst. She and Sean had a great relationship, but she couldn’t cope with the fact that he was bi. This is the episode where she makes her heavily criticized remarks about bisexuality being ‘a myth’ and ‘a layover on the way to gaytown’. Biphobia is an appalling reason to end a relationship – although it would have been a great reason for Sean to end things with her.

2 Bill Dumped Carrie For Her Job (Supposedly)

Bill and Carrie seemed like a match made in heaven, but the end of her affair with the politician fell flat. Ostensibly, Bill claimed that he was ending things because Carrie’s career as a sex columnist might have a negative impact on his own campaign, but it was clear that it was because she wasn’t willing to be part of his specific kink. As a reason, sexual incompatibility may hold up – but lying about it doesn’t.

1 Charlotte Dumps Stephan For Not Being ‘Masculine’ Enough

Charlotte briefly dates Stephan in another now-problematic storyline where she wonders if he is gay, based purely on his style and love of baking. However, when he assures her that he is straight, the two start a great relationship – that she ends when he is afraid of a mouse, and she decides he isn’t ‘manly’ enough. Restrictive ideas of gender roles is never a great reason to end things – especially as they could just call an exterminator! Stephan deserved better.
