Star Wars might be all about good and evil factions duking it out for power or freedom, but the Force plays a huge part in it. Wielders of the light and dark sides of the Force tend to get caught up in galactic affairs, bringing their extraordinary powers with them. The greatest of these users are undoubtedly the benevolent, ancient Jedi, and the evil, mysterious Sith–polar-opposite sects with vastly different ideologies.

Both sides have some neat tricks up their sleeve that give them an advantage. Light siders rely on harmony, tranquility, and pragmatism, while the Sith rely on anger, aggression, and selfishness. Here are 5 Force Powers wielded by either side which make them ideologically incompatible.

10 Light Side: Healing

The Jedi rely heavily on their connection to the Force as a conduit to heal wounds and revitalize the body. It can also be used in conjunction with secondary powers such as breath control in order to prevent and/or reduce injury. This is invaluable for light side practitioners who, by their very nature take the slow and difficult path through life.

The Sith may also utilize healing techniques as well, but theirs focuses primarily on keeping the body together long enough to go the distance. In contrast to the Jedi’s spiritual and physical healing techniques, the Sith harnessed rage and frustration to formulate a patchwork for injuries.

9 Dark Side: Dominate Mind

This nefarious technique is used by many of the most powerful Sith as a means to extract information from an unwilling subject. It is primarily used during interrogations, but it may also be used for the purpose of psychological torment.

Since the Dominate Mind technique is so wicked in approach, it is forbidden to the Jedi who rely on a far more subtle and gentle variant known as Persuasion. Unfortunate victims of Dominate Mind can be permanently scarred by the ordeal, or outright killed by the trauma.

8 Light Side: Battle Meditation

Proficient light siders are able to utilize a branch of the Force known as Battle Meditation which is especially handy during times of conflict. Acting as leaders, Jedi can extend their Force influence outwards to boost troop morale and concentration, making for a more effective fighting unit.

Jedi may also use Battle Meditation on one another in order to synchronize their offensive and defensive techniques. This can sometimes be subtle and involuntary as in the case of a Jedi Master and a Padawan, or it may be a concentrated and coordinated skill that allows two force users to connect on a far deeper level.

7 Dark Side: Force Lightning

Force Lightning is most commonly associated with the dark side due to its highly destructive and violent nature. The Sith utilize the technique either as a keep-away tactic or for the purpose of a surprise attack, but it can also be used simply as a means to inflict pain on someone for the sheer joy of it.

It should be noted that Force Lightning can and has been used by light siders, but these tend to be different variants that yield different results. However, given the torrid nature of the technique, many harmony-focused light siders never find the balance necessary to wield it.

6 Light Side: Force Persuasion

In contrast to the Sith’s use of Dominate Mind, the Jedi prefer a much gentler technique known as Persuasion. This is a highly watered-down version of Dominate Mind that relies on subtle Force suggestion to sway someone’s thoughts or actions. It may also be used to make an enemy hear things for the purpose of distraction.

Force Persuasion generally works on the weak-minded, and stronger intellects can shrug it off without any influence. Jedi are forbidden from attempting to persuade stronger minds as it can lead them down a slippery slope towards the dark side.

5 Dark Side: Force Choke

Force telekinesis can be used in a variety of ways to lift objects and individuals, or push/pull them away. Dark siders use it for another purpose – to choke the life out of a target. By focusing their Force powers, an assailant can constrict a target’s airways and maintain the grip long enough to kill them outright.

Jedi do not use this technique, as it requires giving in to one’s anger and aggression. However, they are generally not susceptible to the technique, as they can simply use the Force to break the hold and open up their lungs to breathe.

4 Light Side: Force Illusion

The Jedi are very much against outward attacks and prefer to rely on defense. This usually involves activating techniques that can be used to distract, confuse, or intimidate without harming. Force Illusion is one such power that more accomplished light siders can master.

This technique can fool an enemy into seeing someone or something that isn’t really there. Legendary Jedi Master Luke Skywalker used this technique to buy time for the Rebels to escape the planet Crait by projecting an illusion of himself that fooled Kylo Ren.

3 Dark Side: Necromancy

Dark side users (especially Sith) were fascinated with the concept of manipulating the Force to cheat death. This took on many different forms throughout the centuries, but it’s most commonly associated with Darth Plagueis and his ability to prevent people from dying.

His knowledge might have been drawn from ancient Sith Lords who were able to successfully raise undead armies to fight for them. Though such magics rarely resulted in a perfect outcome, they were a tool for more ambitious (and unhinged) Sith and Dark siders to effect their schemes.

2 Light Side: Force Speed

Light siders avoid conflict whenever possible, but when the going gets rough, they can retreat using Force Speed. This technique amplifies their physical prowess which allows them to run at fantastic speeds for a short duration of time, allowing them to escape hot-zones and plan their next move.

This lines up with a light sider’s creed to reject anger and hatred in favor of a passive demeanor. Though it is sometimes necessary for them to take a life, such a thing would only come to pass if there was no alternative.

1 Dark Side: Force Stealth

This particular Force power is perhaps the most insidious and dangerous of them all. It doesn’t kill, maim, or destroy – it does far worse. Force Stealth allows a skilled dark sider to effectively mask their presence which would normally be detected by another Force user.

It allowed Darth Sidious to mingle freely among the Jedi Order for years as Supreme Chancellor of the Republic while he simultaneously orchestrated one of the most devastating periods in its history. With no ability to detect a Sith Lord right under their nose, the Jedi Order’s many mistakes came back to haunt them.
