Sex & The Citys Kristin Davis Is Really Angry About Reboot Age Backlash

Sex & the City’s Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte York, really isn’t happy about the backlash regarding her age in the show’s reboot. Premiering in 1998 and running for six popular seasons, Sex & the City chronicled the romantic lives of four 30-something friends living in New York City. The show, which also spawned two generally disliked movies following its conclusion, is now back once more in the form of a brand new HBO Max reboot titled And Just Like That…

The reboot, which has so far not been kindly received, has also seen backlash from certain critics and audience members for the age of its main characters. Actors Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Davis (Kim Cattrall opted not to return as Samantha), who were in their 40s the last time audiences saw them in 2010’s Sex & the City 2, are now all in their 50s. Much of the social-media chatter regarding the stars’ ages, which has since been dubbed misogynist by Parker, focuses on various aspects of their appearances, including drawing attention to changing hair color and the appearance of facial wrinkles. Despite the backlash, however, the series is HBO Max’s most-viewed series debut yet.

In a new interview with The Times (via Independent), Davis shoots back at the people criticizing the actors’ ages, saying the backlash makes her angry. According to Davis, the fact that so many people focused so intensely on her appearance and those of her co-stars came as a surprise. She says paparazzi would even spend hours “trying to get bad pictures.” Check out Davis’ full comment below:

Everyone wants to comment, pro or nay or whatever, on our hair and our faces and our this and our that. I feel angry and I don’t want to feel angry all the time, so I don’t look at it, I just know it’s there … But I also feel – I’m going to be blunt – I feel like, ‘F*** you. F*** you people, like, come over here and do it better.’ You know what I mean? Like, what are you doing?

The backlash regarding the actors’ ages in And Just Like That… is likely coming from people who didn’t watch the original show. Fans of Sex & the City would likely have been in their 20s or 30s around the time when the show was airing and would therefore be around the same age that Parker, Nixon, and Davis are now. It’s also possible that those who have been vocal about the main characters’ ages are still unhappy with the quality of the most recent Sex & the City movie and are airing their frustration by directly criticizing the main actors.

Women in their 50s are not generally the main characters of movies or TV shows, making And Just Like That… something of an outlier. While there is certainly a vocal contingent of people on social media who are unhappy about the ages of Parker, Nixon, and Davis, there are likely many others who appreciate the effort to depict the romantic lives of a demographic not usually featured front-and-center in pop culture. It’s unfortunate, then, that the reviews for the Sex & the City reboot suggest the series doesn’t do a very good job of it.
