The Devil May Cry and Shin Megami Tensei series will be crossing over once more, as characters from Devil May Cry V will be appearing in Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2.

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2 is featuring a crossover event that will bring Dante, Nero, and V from Devil May Cry V into the game. There is also a promotional campaign running on Facebook which will reward players with free items and summons based on how many likes they can get. The details of the crossover can be found on the official collaboration page.

The purpose of this crossover is to promote the upcoming Devil May Cry V, but it’s hard to shake the idea that this crossover is actually just a reference to a meme concerning both series.

When Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was released in Europe, it was given a new name (Lucifer’s Call) and a new cover, which featured a blurb that pointed out that Dante from the Devil May Cry series was in the game. Dante was added into later versions of the game as part of a deal that took place between Atlus and Capcom, as Capcom wanted the artist who worked on Nocturne to create character designs for Devil May Cry 3, which meant that Dante was allowed to appear in the story of Nocturne in a limited capacity.

Dante is barely in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, yet his inclusion in the game was prominently displayed on the box, which was most likely a way of trying to market the game to as wide an audience as possible, as Nocturne was one of the first games in the series to receive an official English localization.

The “Featuring Dante” logo has since become an Internet meme, with fans adding it to the covers of games that don’t include Dante at all. The same logo can now be used legitimately with Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2.

The director of Shin Megami Tensei V said in an interview that a remake of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was a possibility. Dante’s latest crossover with the Shin Megami Tensei series might just be the first of many and we may see him featured in the remake of Nocturne in the future.

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2 will feature Dante and the other Devil May Cry V characters starting from March 14, 2019.
