Recent tweets from iconic Silent Hill series art director Masahiro Ito suggest Pyramid Head, the franchise’s most popular character, will finally be meeting his demise. This adds fuel to currently circulating rumors that a new entry in the acclaimed Silent Hill survival horror series could be coming soon, perhaps from the developer of the planned-but-abandoned Silent Hills project, Hideo Kojima.

After the cancellation of Silent Hills and the removal of P.T. from the PlayStation Store, many fans thought the series was gone for good. However, in January 2020 leaks surfaced which indicated that Konami was working on two new Silent Hill games, although they have remained unconfirmed. The leak suggested that one of these games would act as a “soft reboot of the franchise” and that the other would be more of “an episodic TellTale/Until Dawn-style game.” According to the person who shared the information, Konami had reached out to multiple developers and asked them to pitch ideas for these projects.

Also in January of 2020, Masahiro Ito announced he was working on a new project as a core member, and now a new tweet may provide some insight into what that current project is. Recently, the former member of Konami’s Team Silent tweeted a message which said “This tweet means that I have nothing to tweet. If it goes well, I will have nothing to tweet tomorrow.” While at first written off as a common Twitter joke, Ito’s message the following day was much, much more intriguing. Check it out below, along with a separate Tweet from 2017 (thanks, PlayStationLifeStyle) in which Ito dictated the necessities for him returning to the Silent Hill franchise.

Pyramid Head, R.I.P.

If it’s not sequel and I don’t have to use Pyramid Head or can kill him in the opening, I’ll have no qualms about joining it. https://t.co/oBkAbNo5wM

It’s a well-known fact among members of the Silent Hill community that Pyramid Head, although an undeniably iconic monster, was never meant to turn into such a game-spanning villain. Originally created by Ito as a projection of Silent Hill 2 protagonist James Sunderland’s fractured psyche, the character eventually became not much more than a requisite monster inclusion in later Silent Hill games and was also featured in the 2006’s Silent Hill film adaptation. Ito’s desire to kill off his own creation is completely understandable, and would be a wonderful way to move the franchise forward.

This information, coupled with Hideo Kojima’s announcement that his next project will be a horror title and the developer’s own recent tweets which some have taken to indicate a return to the Silent Hill series, could very well mean that if such a entry does occur, it will be helmed by the best team possible. Fans were dismayed when Kojima’s Silent Hills project was cancelled, and combining those ideas with Masahiro Ito’s knowledge and experience with the franchise can only mean good, albeit scary, things may be in store for fans of the Silent Hill series in the future.
