Varys is one of the most interesting supporting characters in Game of Thrones. Known as the Master of Whispers, Varys is the one person in Westeros who seems to know everyone’s dirty secrets. Over time, he became a significant figure in deciding who would sit on the Iron Throne.

Though he is an intelligent and cunning character, there are still some things that don’t make sense about Varys. With so many plots and schemes throughout the series, not everything has added up in the end. Here are some things that still don’t make sense about Varys from Game of Thrones.

10 Robert Baratheon

When Varys is introduced in the series, he is serving on the Small Council for King Robert Baratheon. However, Robert is not the first king that Varys served. He was initially selected by the Mad King Aerys Targaryen to become the Master of Whispers.

Once Robert won the throne, he decided to keep some of the people who served predecessor. However, it seems like a mistake to keep the one guy who is known to be a spy. As it turns out, Varys was not to be trusted, which should have been obvious.

9 Friendship With Littlefinger

Varys shares a unique relationship with Littlefinger throughout the series. The two men come from humble beginnings and managed to work their way up to a seat on the small council. They obviously share a respect for each other, but it’s never clear if they are friends or enemies.

There are many times when each of them could have gotten the other killed but didn’t. Varys expresses concern over Littlefinger being a genuine threat to the realm, but he never does anything to really stop him.

8 The Sorcerer

Game of Thrones 10 Things That Make No Sense About Varys

Varys is known as “the Eunuch” in King’s Landing due to a horrific mutilation he suffered as a child. As Varys explains, a sorcerer castrated him and burned his genitals as part of a dark ceremony. During the ritual, Varys says that the sorcerer spoke in a foreign language and a voice answered him.

When meeting a Red Priestess in Meereen, she tells Varys that she knows about the ritual and asks if he would like to know what the voice said. But viewers never get any more insight into what the sorcerer was doing or what the voice said.

7 Little Birds

Varys’ power in Westeros comes from his ability to gain information from all over. He frequently talks about his “little birds” who tell him all kinds of secrets. As it turns out, the little birds are actually children who spy for him all around Westeros.

It seems strange that Westeros’ greatest spy trusts a bunch of children to carry out his bidding. Also, once Varys leaves Westeros, Qyburn effortlessly takes over his little birds which makes one wonder why more people weren’t doing this if it was so simple.

6 Tyrion

Varys and Tyrion Lannister became one of the most interesting duos in the show. These two men were disrespected by most of the world, but together, they knew they were some of the smartest people in Westeros.

However, their friendship was a bit dubious at first. They seemed to find a lot of commonalities quickly, but they also tried to play mind games and blackmail each other. Varys even testified against Tyrion at the trial of Joffrey’s murder.

5 Network Of Spies

Game of Thrones 10 Things That Make No Sense About Varys

Aside from the little birds in King’s Landing, Varys had a spy network that stretched all over the world. He was able to bring news back from Essos as he spied on Daenerys Targaryen for Robert Baratheon.

But this huge spy network seems even more preposterous than the legion of children spies. How long would it take for one message to gets from one side of the world to the other? And how could Varys even believe the information once it finally did arrive?

4 Backing Daenerys

Game of Thrones 10 Things That Make No Sense About Varys

When Varys and Tyrion travel to Essos, the former reveals his big plan for them to join Daenerys in her quest to win back the Iron Throne. But just how long was Varys backing Daenerys before this?

In Season 1, he is seen scheming with Illyrio Mopatis, the man who arranged the marriage between Daenerys and Drogo. But also in Season 1, Varys helps arrange the assassination attempt on Daenerys. He also seems worried when he hears she has dragons. If he wanted her to be queen, he took a strange approach to making it happen.

3 Transporting Around The World

At the end of Season 6, Daenerys is finally making her plans to set sail for Westeros. Varys is sent on a secret mission to join the Martells and the Tyrells to Daenerys’ army, which he achieves.

But when Daenerys sets sail from Meereen at the end of the season, Varys is with her. How did he make it back across the world so quickly? And why would he go all the way back if everyone was just going to meet up at Dragonstone eventually?

2 For The Realm

Game of Thrones 10 Things That Make No Sense About Varys

Varys is not someone looking to gain power for himself, but he does pull the strings behind the scenes. He says many times that his mission is simply that he wants to do what is best “for the realm,” which means putting someone on the throne who will be just and whom people will support.

Though if that was his only goal, Daenerys seemed like a strange choice. Varys may not have known she would turn out to be so evil, but she is still a conqueror from another land who has dragons and a massive army. Why did he think this would bring peace to Westeros?

1 The Waiting Game

Varys may have really wanted to do what was best for the realm, but he wasn’t very quick to act in seeing anything actually get accomplished. For five seasons, Varys did nothing while Westeros got worse and worse.

When he finally did decide to join Daenerys, it was another two seasons before he did anything. If the fate of the realm was at stake, why did he wait so long before he finally decided to do something about it?
