The Sims 4: Get To Work was well-received for adding a number of careers into the game that allowed the player to follow their Sims to work and actually take part in their working day. The Scientist career is one of these and involves technology, inventions, and managing to form close relationships with your scientist workmates.

While it’s not required in general, it is fun to join your Sim while they work, and doing well at the job will get Sims promotions far quicker than leaving them to their own devices. Here we take a look at how to help your Sim reach their scientific potential.

Scientist Career Tasks

While in our world science is a huge umbrella term, in the Sims it seems to apply mostly to chemistry and engineering. Those are the main topics of focus when it comes to being a Scientist.

When you join your Sim at work, you will receive a number of tasks that appear in the upper-left corner of the screen. If you hover your mouse over them, they will give you hints on how to complete them – such as which machines you need to use or what actions you need to take.

  • Use the Chemistry Lab to synthesize Serums. Also, be careful not to take them unless you understand the consequences or you might end up with a negative moodlet!
  • After you use the Invention Constructor to make something, you can click and drag the newly crafted item to another location in the lab – you can’t test out your inventions otherwise.
  • Buy plenty of seed packs to have the requisite plants for use with the analysis tasks you might get.
  • You can ask your workmates for metals if you can’t find any in the lab or its surrounding area.

The Scientist Career Structure

In order to progress through the Scientist Career you will need to do two things:

  • Gain a high performance rating at work.
  • Experience multiple breakthroughs.

The former is easy – simply join your Sim and complete as many tasks as you can before the day ends. While the career tab says that being in a Focused mood will help you with your performance, it may be better to go for Energized or Confident moods to help with task time or social interactions.

If you need a little extra time to complete your tasks, you can click the button next to your work timer to extend your working day. Alternatively, you can use this button to end your working day early if you’ve already completed all of your tasks.

Breakthroughs, however, are different. They are passively acquired as you make your Sim take thoughtful actions. These could be reading a book, pondering chess moves, or even taking a shower. The number of breakthroughs required for a promotion increases by two each time you get promoted, so you’ll need to learn to live a life of farming breakthroughs quickly.

The table below details the Scientist Career path and promotion requirements.

Inventions And Serums

Two unique aspects of the Scientist Career are the Invention Constructor and the Serums added to the game. They are both discovered by Sims having breakthroughs, and they can then turn the thoughts into reality whilst at work.

Items created with the Invention Constructor can be put into a Sim’s inventory and then placed at home if desired. The following table has a list of the unique inventions that can be created.

While the first two inventions are simply decorations with Focusing auras, the other inventions have very specific uses.

  • The Cloning Machine can duplicate food, collectibles, and serums at first, but can be upgraded to be able to clone entire Sims once you’ve reached Level Eight in the Scientist Career.
    • The new Sim will be added to the family immediately and has the same name as the source Sim.
    • The new Sim has a chance of being an evil twin with the “Evil” and “Mean” traits.
  • The Satellite Dish can do multiple things but is mainly used to contact aliens.
    • You can both encourage and prevent alien abductions by using the Satellite Dish.
    • You can also influence the mood of the entire neighborhood.
    • Lots with a Satellite Dish on them will have access to an alien TV channel.
  • The SimRay is an accessory that can be gradually upgraded as you progress through the Scientist Career. It allows you to affect other Sims in various ways, such as freezing them, forcing them to follow your commands, or changing their appearance.
  • The Electroflux Wormhole Generator allows Sims to travel to Sixam, the alien planet that is also accessible by upgrading a Rocket Ship with a Wormhole Generator.
    • Going to Sixam allows you to meet alien Sims and find rare collectibles.

Serums, on the other hand, are potions that can be created at a chemistry lab. They can be very helpful or extremely dangerous, so be careful when using them.

Serums are gated by Scientist Career level and the more valuable ones (such as Age-Away and Reaper’s Friend, both of which are routes to immortality) are only discoverable at very high levels. They mostly require plants to make, so having a Gardener Sim in the family is helpful for stocking up on lots of Serums.

Scientist Career Rewards

As you progress through the Scientist Career, you will earn plenty of rewards. In addition to bonuses, you can acquire new clothes and new items.

To use your new clothes you can edit your outfits with a wardrobe or a mirror. The item rewards are inserted directly into your household inventory, but you can buy extras once you’ve acquired one. Doors and windows are only unlocked, not added to your inventory.

The table below details what you’ll get and when.
