Echo Fox’s descent into oblivion was finally realized with the recent news that Dominique “SonicFox” McLean, one of the most prolific fighting game community competitors, has announced they are no longer a part of the troubled team. Following a tumultuous period last summer where allegations of hate speech and subsequent investigations lead to Rick Fox exiting as a shareholder, the team was alive only in spirit following a disbandment in November 2019.
Once one of the most successful esports franchises in the fighting game community, the departure of SonicFox and the earlier departure of Smash Ultimate titan Leonardo “MKLeo” Perez following his dominant run at Frostbite 2020 signifies that this stable is indeed dead. At one time, Echo Fox sponsored the likes of Victor “Punk” Woodley, Du “NuckleDu” Dang, Justin Wong and Smash God Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman. Though the team formally disbanded in November, it is unclear if SonicFox was still under contract up until the announcement of their departure.
SonicFox made the announcement via Twitter, saying “Announcing my official departure from Echo Fox! Had a lot of good runs with the team and it changed my life! Looking forward to the future and new opportunities! Expect new announcements soon.” Their official Twitter also has contact information for further business inquiries.
Now that SonicFox is officially a free agent, it’s hard to imagine they will be waiting a longtime to be picked up by a new team. A tremendous personality and prominent figure in the fighting game community, SonicFox is a five-time EVO champion and a commanding presence in the scene. Their rivalry with Goichi “GO1” Kishida in Dragonball FighterZ is among one of the best in the genre’s history, and their takedown of Perfect Legend is still talked about to this day.
Sponsors who are looking to get into the fighting game community have a huge dearth of talent in free agency to consider. Though MKLeo recently signed with T1, Punk and NuckleDu would be huge acquisitions for teams to either blast into the fighting game scene or bolster their own ranks, as both competitors are considered among the absolute best in their respective games. Considering SonicFox’s appeal and status, there’s a good chance that they’ve already been picked up and we’ll know soon enough who landed the biggest free agent in esports.
