The Silver Surfer is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, yet ironically, Norrin Radd acquired the Power Cosmic by submitting himself to an even stronger being, Galactus the Devourer of Worlds. After agreeing to find new planets for Galactus to eat, Norrin was given cosmic-level speed, strength, and senses to fulfill his task. This allowed and obliged him to doom many worlds, a fact that still causes him endless guilt.

Strangely, however, the Silver Surfer once had cause to take on a herald of his own. The circumstances behind that unique partnership were far more lighthearted than the Surfer’s own servitude to Galactus, and – thankfully – ended on a more positive note.

Readers got to meet the Silver Surfer’s herald during the celebrated Silver Surfer run by Dan Slott, Mike Allred, and Laura Allred. During this period, the Surfer chose to take an Earthgirl, Dawn Greenwood, on a trip through the galaxy to show her the wonders of the universe. However, prior to these adventures, the Surfer had saved a tiny planet – creating ramifications that he was completely unaware of.

The planet turned out to be the miniature world of Brundlebus 3, whose inhabitants were microscopic compared to the Surfer. Realizing their world would be doomed since their sun was in danger of burning out, the Surfer used his Power Cosmic to rekindle the sun, earning him the gratitude of the entire world. When the Brundlebuds began building statues in honor of the Surfer, however, the Silver Surfer felt unworthy of such worship and flew away.

Unknown to the Surfer, the Brundlebud in charge of designing the statues was the world’s chief builder Tindly Hardlesnop. Wanting to serve the Surfer, Tindly invented the “Brundleboost Wonder-Suit” and flew off into deep space in search of the Surfer. Eventually he found him and used the suit to grow into a larger (but still diminutive) size that allowed him to communicate with the Surfer. Offering to become the Surfer’s “Harold,” Tindly’s offer was accepted and he joined Dawn and the Surfer on their adventures as “Tiny Harold.”

Right from the start, however, “Tiny Harold” showed he was more of an equal partner than a traditional herald. When an alien pirate attempted to shoot Dawn, Harold moved the barrel a single micron, causing the shot to miss. He also reprogrammed explosive computers by physically entering them, and even pretended to be the conscience of some space-villains, confusing them long enough for the Surfer to get the upper hand.

Ironically, “Tiny Harold” eventually found a planet that was so small, he was like a towering space entity to its people. Realizing these people also needed the same kind of help the Surfer had once provided Brundlebus 3, Harold opted to stay with the planet as its new guardian, and the Surfer “released” him from any further obligation to serve as his herald. Although his partnership with the Silver Surfer proved brief (lasting literally one issue), “Tiny Harold” was a memorable character – and offered a unique glimpse into how the Silver Surfer dealt with having a herald of his own.
