Jax Teller, for better or worse, is one of the most complicated and deep protagonists in modern television. His intense demeanor, fierce loyalty to his motorcycle club, and charming personality wooed audiences into his world of betrayal and murder, in which he regularly has to make life-or-death decisions affecting the people around him.

Some decisions that, while Jax believes are justified, audiences may not always completely agree with. Sometimes his actions, and the consequences of his actions, make audiences feel sympathetic for the young biker gang member, but other times his actions disgust the audiences.

10 Hated Him: Making Juice Kill Darvaney

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Times We Felt Bad For Jax (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

Juice truly deserved better than what Jax and the rest of SAMCRO gave to him. And so did Darvaney Jennings, girlfriend of Sons member Arcadio, and mother to Matthew, the young boy who shot up his school in what is arguably one of Sons of Anarchy’s most shocking scenes. The resulting chaos in the club ended with Jax ordering Juice to shoot the distraught Darvaney up with heroin, and then end her life, which he does by smothering the now-childless mother to death with a pillow.

This is a moment that stays with Juice, and another in a long line of emotional scars that dissociate Juice with his life in SAMCRO. And it was on Jax’s orders; something audiences had difficulty forgiving him for.

9 Felt Bad: Giving Up His Children

In the final episode, Jax is tying up all of his loose ends. He’s completely aware of the fate that must befall him, but before he meets Mr. Mayhem, he has to make sure his sons, Abel and Thomas, are cared for. And the only option he has is to leave them with Wendy and Nero, two of the only characters on the show capable of caring and providing for the two young boys.

In his final moment seeing them, we feel for Jax. Seeing him say goodbye to his boys, knowing they’re going to finally be safe out of his hands, is a bittersweet moment that tugs the heartstrings.

8 Hated Him: Killed Jury & Claimed Self Defense

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Times We Felt Bad For Jax (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

The men who Jax rides with are supposed to be his brothers, making the idea of one of the SAMCRO members is a rat unthinkable. This tight-knit mentality is what leads to Jax’s intense hatred of Jury, the man whom he believes is the most likely candidate, despite lacking evidence.

Cold-heartedly, Jax shoots Jury to death, and when questioned about it, Jax claims Jury shot first. This isn’t just a betrayal of one of Jax’s brothers, but a betrayal of his own honor.

7 Felt Bad: Watching Bobby Die

Bobby was a fan-favorite member of the Sons. The lovable, Elvis-impersonating Vice President of SAMCRO was a stable presence in the club. He wasn’t afraid of violence, but he was always the most even-tempered and intelligent member, often serving as a foil to the unstable Tig. He worked well with everyone around him and made them all better people.

It’s these traits and his string of positive effects on the people around him that make his cold-blooded murder right in front of Jax all the more heartbreaking. Watching Marks shoot Bobby in the head is a shocking, difficult moment that helps push Jax to his demise.

6 Hated Him: Betraying Tig

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Times We Felt Bad For Jax (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

One thing about Jax that is not up for question is his undying loyalty for his club. His actions have rarely ever been selfish, as the most important thing in his life is SAMCRO and the people who are a part of it.

However, Jax, without much argument or hesitation, gives up Tig to Damon Pope for the accidental murder of August Marks’ daughter. While Tig isn’t completely innocent in the situation, Tig being given to Pope just felt unnecessary. Along with Jury’s murder, this is another moment that goes against everything that Jax has ever stood for.

5 Felt Bad: Tara’s Death

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Times We Felt Bad For Jax (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

How could this one not hit the audience in the emotions? Jax, completely unaware that it was at the hands of his own mother, finds the love of his life dead in her own kitchen, clearly having just been murdered.

Tara was one of the few lights in Jax’s life; she was his motivation to create a better life for himself, for her, and for Abel and Thomas. It was a moment that completely changed Jax Teller, and despite all of the other horrific things that he’s done, this is truly the beginning of his end.

4 Hated Him: Gave Wendy The Heroin

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Times We Felt Bad For Jax (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

At the beginning of the series, Wendy was unsympathetic, with audiences despising her and dismissing her as a junkie. She caused unnecessary problems for the people around her and put Abel’s life at risk with her drug usage. However, when she returns clean and sober, ready to be a mother to care for Abel, Jax responds with hostility. She’s doing what any mother would do, trying to get her son away from a violent gangster, but Jax doesn’t see it that way.

Instead of taking a reasonable approach, he does something despicable: injecting her with heroin, making sure she isn’t able to pass the drug tests necessary for her to take custody. Pushing her back into the arms of addiction is unmistakably one of his lowest lows.

3 Felt Bad: Killing His Mother

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Times We Felt Bad For Jax (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

As bad as it was, and despite the fact it makes us hate him even more, there’s something about Jax murdering Gemma, his own mother, that makes us feel bad for him. Their relationship hasn’t always been healthy. This is a moment where Jax is at his wits’ end after Gemma killed Tara and blamed it on the Chinese triads, leading to a series of unnecessary conflicts. It’s an almost Shakespearean moment, the two walking in the rose garden, the son knowing that his mother deserves to die.

Jax has no other choice but to end the life of his meddling mother. And even though audiences are still reeling from the murder of Unser moments beforehand, Jax’s murder of Gemma is an unthinkably sad moment.

2 Hated Him: Killed Unser

Sons Of Anarchy 5 Times We Felt Bad For Jax (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

Wayne Unser was helpless and sick, and he never acted with malice, despite the uncountable number of dangerous situations SAMCRO forced him into. Every time Unser came into conflict with Jax, or any member of the club, it was only to work for the greater good, trying to guide them to be better people.

Even though it happened mere moments before Jax killed Gemma, it hit the audience’s emotions differently. Unser was the best among everyone in the show and did not deserve his fate. Jax Teller gunning down the sick former cop is hands down his worst moment.

1 Felt Bad: Watching Opie Die

This one was a heartbreaker. Despite everything Jax ever did before this and everything that he ever did afterward, we understand how Jax felt in this moment, watching helplessly as his best friend was murdered in front of him.

Jax even tried to sacrifice himself for the good of his crew, but Opie beat him to it, taking on his assailants before succumbing to a pipe to the head. It was a painful, defining moment for Jax that changed him and SAMCRO for good. Nothing was ever the same.
