Sony confirms that PS4 DualShock controllers will not be compatible with PS5 games, but a lot of current-gen accessories can be used on the next-gen console.

As the release of the PlayStation 5 grows ever closer, Sony continues to drip-feed gamers with more information. Revealed details include some of the games available at launch, the ability to play PS4 games on the new console, and that there will be two versions of the PS5 released this holiday season. Details not yet revealed include whether it will come in different colors and the long-awaited unveiling of its price.

To kick off this week, Sony revealed some interesting details about which accessories will be compatible with the PS5 and which ones will not. The news was revealed via the PlayStation Blog and the biggest reveal of all pertained to the current generation of PS controllers. Turns out the PS4’s DualShock will not be compatible with PS5 games.

PlayStation’s peripheral marketing head Isabelle Tomatis wrote, “We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.” On the bright side, Tomatis clarified that PS5 players will be able to use DualShock controllers while playing PS4 games on the new console.

The reveal that DualShock controllers won’t be compatible with PS5 games was the only bad news to come out of the blog. Plus, the reasoning for that makes a lot of sense. As for the rest of the PlayStation accessories people might want to carry over to the next-gen, almost all of them are included on the list of items that can be used on both the PS4 and the PS5.

The items making the crossover include officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, flight sticks, PlayStation’s Platinum and Gold Wireless headsets, third party headsets that connect via USB or audio jack, and PS Move and PS VR controllers with “supported PS VR games on PS5”. The PlayStation Camera will also be compatible with the PS5 but will need an additional adaptor. However, Sony has promised the adaptor will be available free of charge.
