Sony’s President and CEO has confirmed that no Vita 2 is coming, so you can all stop holding your breath.

We loved the Vita. Heck, there are still people out there that use the Vita to this day. That’s despite the fact that it’s almost a decade-old portable system that has long since been supplanted by phones and/or the Nintendo Switch.

However, Sony has basically said that they’re not planning on getting back into the handheld market anytime soon. This cedes that market to Nintendo, which has allowed the Switch to become the most successful Nintendo console since the Wii, but it also means that Vita fans are sorely disappointed in Sony’s lack of enthusiasm for handhelds.

Just to put another nail in that coffin, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Jim Ryan recently did an interview with Game Informer for the PlayStation’s 25th anniversary. They talked about every generation of PlayStation, but he also made it clear that the Vita is dead and no new Vita is coming.

“PlayStation Vita was brilliant in many ways, and the actual gaming experience was great, but clearly it’s a business that we’re no longer in now,” Ryan said, followed by the almost imperceptible cry of every Vita fan’s hearts breaking at once.

Sony discontinued the Vita back in March of this year and has also stopped making discs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get new games for it. There’s a vibrant market for indie games on the Vita that’s still going strong. Stardew Valley and Minecraft are both huge Vita draws, while visual novels and classic JRPGs make up the rest.

However, even this minor Vita renaissance is doomed to end eventually. As soon as Sony pulls the plug on the PlayStation Store on Vita, then you won’t have any means of grabbing new titles. On that day, the Vita will be well and truly dead.

But that day ain’t today, so game on, you crazy Vita fans!
