Boots Riley’s satirical masterpiece Sorry to Bother You is one of the most fiercely original movies in recent memory, expertly blending an absurd heightened reality with eye-opening social commentary. Lakeith Stanfield stars as a telemarketer who becomes successful by affecting a Caucasian accent, rises through the corporate ranks, and uncovers a disturbing conspiracy.

As a whole, the movie is an indictment of economic imbalance as a workers’ union fights for a living wage and an eccentric celebrity CEO tries to bring back slavery, but it touches on plenty of other facets of our society and culture along the way. It’s a very surreal movie filled with unforgettable moments.

What kicks off Sorry to Bother You is Cassius “Cash” Green getting a job as a telemarketer and initially struggling to find success at it. An older co-worker named Langston, played by Danny Glover, becomes a sort of mentor figure.

He tells Cash to use his “white voice” when he’s talking to customers. This is based on director Boots Riley’s own experiences as a telemarketer, as he had to affect a different accent to make sales. Cash’s white voice is David Cross and Langston’s, although it sounds eerily like Steve Buscemi, is temp engineer Ryan Coursey, who happened to be on the set that day.

He goes through the wrong door and finds a half-human half-horse hybrid chained to the wall, begging him for help. This is usually the moment that Sorry to Bother You sears itself into the viewer’s memory.

Early in Sorry to Bother You, Riley plants a fictional reality show whose title sums up the shameful trajectory of the television landscape: I Got the Sh*t Kicked Out of Me. It’s exactly what it sounds like. The movie actually makes an interesting parallel between exploiting people for entertainment and exploiting people for cheap labor.

This plant is paid off brilliantly later in the movie when Cash has a video of the equisapiens and goes on the show in order to expose it.

In a desperate bid to overpower the powerful and expose the diabolical schemes of Steve Lift to the world, Cash endures relentless humiliation on I Got the Sh*t Kicked Out of Me just to get a video played that will expose the equisapiens to the world.

Unfortunately, no one cares. The equisapiens are praised as a scientific breakthrough and WorryFree’s stock goes through the roof. The sad thing is, this is probably exactly what would happen.

After turning into an equisapien, Cash rounds up a small army of equisapiens and heads to Steve Lift’s house. Lift sits at home, terrified, as his Frankenstein-esque creations break down his door and come charging into his house.

Having said everything he wanted to say about capitalism in the movie itself, Riley added a pre-credits stinger to give the audience some catharsis with Lift finally getting his comeuppance.
