One of the things that makes The Suicide Squad such a unique superhero movie is that it is not afraid to show the main characters being both good and bad. Despite being supervillains that make up the titular team, Harley Quinn and co. prove to be capable of good deeds — at times.

On the other hand, some of these characters find it difficult to shake their bad guy tendencies and end up doing terrible things. This contrast of good and bad within the main characters adds to the movie’s strange mix of sweet moments and twistedly evil moments.

10 Amanda Waller: Not Killing Her Employees / Sending Team A To Die

The Suicide Squad The Best And Worst Thing Each Main Character Did

When Amanda Waller is about to kill Bloodsport and the others for trying to stop Starro, her employees finally act and knock her out. Given how ruthless Waller has been before, the fact that she doesn’t have them killed is quite surprising and a rare moment of restraint for her.

However, her ruthlessness is really shown in the opening scene in which Waller purposely leads one team into an ambush to ensure the other team has no trouble. She is even willing to let Rick Flagg die just to achieve this simple adjective.

9 Starro: Not Killing The Suicide Squad / Killing All The Citizens Of Corto Maltese

The Suicide Squad The Best And Worst Thing Each Main Character Did

Starro is a terrifying monster but it seems to mostly want to be left alone. When it finally escapes from its captivity, Starro takes revenge on the Corto Maltese army but is fine with letting the Suicide Squad walk away. It is an act of mercy that shows Starro is not a bloodthirsty monster.

But while Starro doesn’t want to kill senselessly, it seems bent on revenge against those who tortured it. After the Thinker and the military are dead, Starro turns on the people of Corto Maltese who had nothing to do with Starro’s torture and were victims themselves.

8 The Thinker: Criticizing Luna For Killing His People / Torturing Countless People

The Thinker is another character with few redeeming qualities. One moment in which he doesn’t appear to be totally evil is when he complains to Luna that his fellow scientists were killed. It is a brief instance of him thinking of others, though it’s also likely he sees this as an inconvenience.

However, when Thinker’s experiments with Starro are revealed, he proves how evil he is. He has spent years torturing and mutilating people in order to learn more about the alien. Even as he explains his horrible crimes, Thinker excuses them as scientific pursuits.

7 Polka-Dot Man: Mourning Milton / Murdering Resistance Fighters

One of the most surprising moments in The Suicide Squad is Milton’s death. The resistance fighter helped the team most of the way, but when he is killed, Polka-Dot Man is the only one to mourn him. Despite being a villain, Polka-Dot Man shows he hates to see a good person die.

Though his sympathy for Milton was sweet, that doesn’t mean his hands are clean in this whole mess. Thanks to a miscommunication, the team invades a rebel camp to save Flagg, killing many in brutal fashion. When it is revealed the rebels saved Flagg, Polka-Dot man seems oblivious to the murder they just committed.

6 Rick Flagg: Trying To Reveal The Truth / Leading The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad The Best And Worst Thing Each Main Character Did

Rick Flagg seems like the perfect soldier who follows his orders no matter what. But he is horrified to discover the United States government was involved in the Starro experiments. That is the breaking point for Flagg, who is willing to put his life on the line to reveal the truth.

While Flagg eventually sees the atrocities committed by the people he works for, it should have happened a lot sooner. The entire Suicide Squad concept is quite disturbing and Flagg proved that he was complicit in the crimes by leading the team.

5 King Shark: Agreeing To Be Ratcatcher’s Friend / Trying To Eat Ratcatcher

The Suicide Squad The Best And Worst Thing Each Main Character Did

King Shark is the strongest member of the team but most of them don’t trust the man-easting shark. However, Ratcatcher 2 seems to recognize his gentle side and asks if he will be his friend which King Shark agrees to. It is an unexpected moment of friendship in The Suicide Squad.

Of course, just moments before Ratcatcher and King Shark became friends, King Shark proved why he is not easy to trust. As the team is sleeping, King Shark tries to eat Ratcatcher. Not only that, but he gets very angry when Bloodsport spoils his meal.

4 Ratcatcher 2: Saving The Day With Her Rats / Not Respecting Bloodsport’s Phobia

The Suicide Squad The Best And Worst Thing Each Main Character Did

Ratcatcher 2 is very much the heart of the movie so it makes sense that she is the one who saves the day. Just as the team seems doomed, Ratcatcher calls her rats to swarm Starro and begin eating him. It is even more powerful as she thinks about the lessons her father taught and proves herself a hero.

Unfortunately, Bloodsport has a phobia of rats, which makes their partnership difficult. But while Ratcatcher 2 didn’t know this beforehand, she keeps trying to force her rat on Bloodsport despite his obvious discomfort with it.

3 Peacemaker: Ordering A Beer For Sebastian / Killing Flagg

The Suicide Squad The Best And Worst Thing Each Main Character Did

With a name like Peacemaker, fans would think he would be a friendlier guy. But while he is very much a jerk most of the time, when Peacemaker points out that the waitress forgot to bring a drink for the rat Sebastian, it’s easy to like him a little.

Sadly, it turns out Peacemaker is Waller’s secret spy on the inside and when Flagg tries to release the truth about Starro, Peacemaker kills him. It is the most shocking death in The Suicide Squad and a turning point that shows Peacemaker for the villain he is.

2 Harley Quinn: Carrying The Javelin / Being Insensitive About Milton’s Death

The Suicide Squad The Best And Worst Thing Each Main Character Did

When Harley Quinn is given a javelin from Javelin as he dies along with the first Suicide Squad team, she takes the responsibility surprisingly seriously. She might see it as more of a game, but it is sort of nice she would carry on the mantel for someone she just met.

But while she might have respected Javelin in death, she doesn’t show the same courtesy for Milton. When Polka-Dot Man mourns their fallen comrade, Harley admits she doesn’t know who Milton is, which seems like an unnecessarily callous comment.

1 Bloodsport: Deciding To Fight Starro / Being A Bad Father

Though Bloodsport has an attitude that he just wants to do the mission and go home, he has moments that suggest real heroism. So when Waller tells him the mission is over, it is not surprising that he chooses to stay and fight Starro, even though it will likely mean his death.

Despite his heroics, Bloodsport is still a complicated man as evidenced by his relationship with his daughter. When she reveals she was arrested, Bloodsport is angrier that she was caught and proceeds to curse at her. While he cares more than he lets on, that isn’t a great parenting moment for him.
