At this year’s virtual Gamescom, Spellbreak announced that it will officially be launching on September 3. The game is developed by Proletariat, a fairly new studio composed of industry veterans.

Originally slated to be a premium title, Spellbreak recently pivoted to a free-to-play model. Considering the depth of the battle royale market, it’s a move that makes a lot of sense – competing with the likes of Apex Legends and Fortnite is hard enough without a price tag. But as a free title with a wildly unique premise, chances are Spellbreak will find its own niche in the market.

The trailer shown off at Gamescom gave us an updated look at the title and – surprisingly – it looks even better than it did during its last beta. The highlight of Spellbreak’s graphics is the incredible particle system, allowing for a wild combinations of the elements. Throw a fireball into a tornado and you’ll unleash a blazing inferno that threatens to engulf the entire area. No doubt it’s a beautiful game, and Proletariat certainly took advantage of its time in the spotlight.

Late last year, Spellbreak pulled in a massive $20 million investment, led primarily by Take-Two Interactive. This allowed the game to expand its reach to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and receive another layer of polish. Since then it has also been announced for the Nintendo Switch, giving the underpowered console access to another battle royale – a genre that is otherwise lacking on the handheld-hybrid. It’ll even employ crossplay, letting you engage in magical combat with your friends regardless of their system of choice.

We’ve gone hands-on with the magic-based battle royale multiple times and have always been impressed by what we saw. Developer Proletariat is helmed by veterans of the gaming industry, and has deep roots in the MMO world. That experience shines through in Spellbreak, with deep customization options and skills that level up as you progress through a match. This means the action only gets more intense as you approach the final circle, with tornadoes, infernos, and earthquakes rocking the battlefield. With the announcement that the game is launching in exactly one week, we have high hopes that it’ll will become a staple in the genre.

Spellbreak is releasing for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It’ll be available for free on September 3, with cosmetic purchases available in-game.
