The two films in Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man series, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), were met with mediocre reviews from critics and fans alike. However, just because both movies are ranked among the lowest of all Spider-Man movies (particularly on IMDb), that doesn’t mean there isn’t still a lot to love about them.

With rumors that Andrew Garfield might be reprising his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it feels appropriate to reflect on Garfield’s tenure as the iconic web-swinging hero. Not only did the actor bring much humor to the role but his fighting and action sequences highlight how good a Spider-Man he was and how much potential he had that was, arguably, squandered.

Peter Parker, The Vigilante – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

SpiderMan 10 Best Andrew Garfield Action Sequences

In The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker gains superpowers after receiving a spider-bite, and after the murder of his Uncle Ben, he quickly uses these powers to get justice. One of his first encounters sees him approaching a man attacking a woman in an alleyway. Eventually, this leads to him fighting off several men, without him donning his iconic costume.

This scene is a solid display of the series’ darker tone in comparison to other Spider-Man movies, and while many fans on Reddit liked this aspect of The Amazing Spider-Man, it is hard to find the joy of the character within such a gloomy scene. However, in the scene’s defense, it is important to Peter’s later realization that his stint as a revenge-focused vigilante was not in his nature.

Self-Defense On The Subway – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

SpiderMan 10 Best Andrew Garfield Action Sequences

The first action sequence following Peter’s newfound discovery of his powers is a scene that sees him struggling with his bodily changes, as he accidentally becomes stuck to several different objects on the subway. The other passengers become aggressive towards him, particularly as it seems he is trying to start a fight with them.

The scene itself is fairly humorous, and it is an inventive way of displaying Peter’s struggle to get to grips with his powers. However, there have also been some interesting debates on social media, regarding Peter’s identity. An element of this scene is that Peter clearly shows his powers to several people, who would undoubtedly remember this moment upon learning of Spider-Man. It’s surprising that none of them have tracked him down after this, which has led to some wondering if this is maybe a plot hole?

Spider-Man Defeats Electro – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

SpiderMan 10 Best Andrew Garfield Action Sequences

The sequel to Andrew Garfield’s debut as Peter Parker, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, arguably has too many villains in it. With major roles for Electro and Green Goblin and minor appearances of Black Cat and other members of the Sinister Six, the movie struggles to craft a single compelling villain arc.

While Electro receives the most development of all the villains, his demise is arguably visually uninteresting and not on par with the main villain battle of the first film. However, to this scene’s merit, it sees Spider-Man’s primary love interest, Gwen Stacy, assisting him in his takedown of the villain and rejecting the problematic “damsel in distress” trope that makes the sequence enjoyable.

Electro Attack On Times Square – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 saw a vast improvement to Garfield’s Spider-Man suit, along with further development of his upbeat personality. In one of the most visually striking scenes, Spider-Man confronts Electro as he begins to attack those present at Times Square.

Not only is the scene is visually interesting due to Garfield’s new and improved suit but it is also the first appearance of Electro in a Spider-Man movie. It could be argued that this scene succeeds in highlighting the complexity of Electro’s character as it displays his humanity with him being upset that Spider-Man forgot him. It is this characterization that allows many to consider Jamie Foxx’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home a good idea.

The Battle Atop The Oscorp Tower – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

SpiderMan 10 Best Andrew Garfield Action Sequences

The final action sequence of The Amazing Spider-Man sees Spider-Man taking on the Lizard for the last time as the villain attempts to turn the population of New York into reptilian-like creatures. Spider-Man thwarts his plans, with the help of Gwen’s father, Captain Stacy.

It is a very serious finale, one that is emotionally impactful due to the death of someone close to Peter, and as the Lizard saves him from falling off the tower. Dr. Connor’s last-second decision to save Peter is a great example of how Spider-Man comics’ villains can be sympathetic too, especially since it was his ambitions that corrupted his morally good persona.

Spider-Man Runs From The Cops – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

SpiderMan 10 Best Andrew Garfield Action Sequences

An action sequence in The Amazing Spider-Man that helps to distinguish Andrew Garfield as a different iteration of Spider-Man to Tobey Maguire, is when he is on the run from the cops after arresting a car thief. The sequence sees Spider-Man, still looking for his uncle’s killer, webbing a suspect to a wall and running from the cops who see him as a vigilante.

A major element of this scene is Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man as a cocky, playful, hero who jokes around with the criminals whilst apprehending them. It is a scene that elevates the movie due to Garfield’s faithful portrayal of the original comic book iteration, which leads to many arguing that Garfield is a better Spider-Man than Maguire, but perhaps not a better Peter Parker.

The Lizard Attacks Civilians – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

A criticism of Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man is that he is more of a mean-spirited vigilante than a typical hero (which is highlighted by the movie’s gloomy tone). However, the action sequence that takes place on Williamsburg Bridge helps to establish the series as still understanding the fundamentals of the character.

When the Lizard attacks the bridge, throwing cars off into the river below, Spidey intervenes. When the Lizard disappears, a frantic parent yells that his son is trapped in one of the cars that are webbed to the bridge. Spidey quickly approaches the car, calming down the young boy and giving him his mask, encouraging him to be brave. The parent’s display of gratitude allows Spider-Man to learn not to be a vigilante, but a savior.

Battle In The Clock Tower – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

SpiderMan 10 Best Andrew Garfield Action Sequences

While ASM2’s Harry Osborn’s Green Goblin has arguably the worst villain costume in all 8 Spider-Man movies to date, the final action sequence of the is not hindered by this, as the sequence is still emotionally affecting. After defeating Electro, Gwen is captured by the Goblin and the ensuing fight has a tragic end.

Gwen Stacy’s death plays out similarly to the comic event that it is based on. While it is visually different, the emotional resonance of Spider-Man feeling as though he is to blame for her demise translates well. Not only is Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield on top-form, but the relationship between Peter and Gwen is one of the best parts of this series (which allows it to be an emotionally effective action sequence).

The Lizard Attacks Peter’s School – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

SpiderMan 10 Best Andrew Garfield Action Sequences

The Amazing Spider-Man saw the first live-action appearance of one of the Spider-Man comics’ underrated Sinister Six members – the Lizard. The Lizard is the only villain of this movie, allowing for several action sequences that develop the character and his abilities. When he attacks the high school, Peter quickly intervenes.

This sequence shows the promise of Garfield’s Spider-Man, as it sees him adopting the comics’ trademark humor. The sequence feels new and does not copy Sam Raimi’s trilogy, and is, therefore, the most original and innovative action sequence in the duology. It also features one of the most hilarious Stan Lee cameos of all time too.

Spider-Man Fights The Rhino – The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

A truly joyful sequence in what is critically the worst Spider-Man movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man thwarts the Rhino’s criminal actions. The scene opens on the back of Spider-Man as he falls through the air, with ripples in his suit from the wind that show the realism of the design.

It is arguably the most fun sequence of the two movies, incorporating everything that makes Garfield a great Spider-Man. It features Spidey’s trademark humor, his joyful nature, and one of the best-designed Spider-Man suits that is not ruined by overused CGI. This scene establishes Garfield as a Spidey who deserved better movies to star in, so, perhaps, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, he will finally get his chance.
