In a recent interview at the premiere of his new animated movie, Onward, Tom Holland revealed some interesting information regarding the upcoming Uncharted film. Not only does production — apparently — start soon, but the movie will take a great deal of inspiration from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
Tom Holland, who is most widely known for playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, spoke candidly about the upcoming Uncharted film and how excited he is to begin production on it. According to the actor, the ball is set to start rolling in as little as a month from now, despite not having a director officially attached to the project.
Holland also gave some insight on how he ended up being cast as Nathan Drake in the first place. The actor had been explaining to Sony Pictures executive, Tom Rothman, how much he had enjoyed playing Uncharted 4, to which Rothman responded by offering him a role in the film. Holland answered by saying he, “would do anything to play Nathan Drake.” He later explained that, “lots of inspiration from the film is taken from [Uncharted 4] in particular.”
Buzz about an Uncharted movie has been floating around for what seems like a decade now. That being said, an excellent fan-made short film starring Nathan Fillion surfaced on the internet back in 2018. Fillion perfectly captured the charm of Nathan Drake, and fans have been begging for a full length film starring the Firefly star ever since.
Instead, we’re getting an Uncharted film that has had one hell of a rocky start. The movie has lost an astounding six directors at this point, which is what the film industry would call, “development hell.” Many had started speculating that the film would never end up happening, and if it did, there’s no way it would be any good.
It’s still too early to tell if the film will actually be decent when it hits theaters. Despite the struggles though, Tom Holland’s optimism certainly provides for some hope that we could end up with something special. Uncharted is slated for a March 5, 2021 release date and will also star Mark Wahlberg as Sully. Although nothing has officially been announced yet, Venom and Zombieland director, Ruben Fleischer, is rumored to be next in line.
