Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 producer Chris Miller teases Silk being included in the animated sequel. When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse released in 2018, it told the origin story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as the wall-crawling superhero. The animated film also included a number of other Spider-Man characters, including an alternate universe Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). The Spider-Verse post-credits scene also introduced Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), with the character presumed to have a bigger role in the sequel.

After Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse released and became a massive critical hit – going on to win the Best Animated Film Oscar – Sony Animation gave the green light for Spider-Verse 2. In addition to the Spider-Verse sequel, an all-female spinoff was put into development, featuring Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy and other female Spider-Man characters. It was later confirmed the spinoff would include Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman and Cindy Moon aka Silk; now it appears at least one of those characters may be first introduced in Spider-Verse 2.

On Twitter, Miller’s writing/directing/producing partner Phil Lord asked for tip on how to wear face masks if your ears aren’t big enough or stiff enough; Miller responded with an image of Silk. It should be noted that the image is NOT art of Silk from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, but a cropped portion of the cover for the Silk Vol. 2 #4 issue of Marvel Comics. Check out Lord and Miller’s tweets below.

Since the pair are currently at work on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, after producing the first together (Lord also helped craft the story for the 2018 film), it’s possible this is a very vague or unintentional tease for the animated sequel. Perhaps Miller had Silk on the brain because of the production, whether he saw concept art for the character’s design or some early footage. Based on previous reports, we know Silk is already planned to join the Spider-Verse universe in the spinoff, so it would make sense for her to be first introduced in the main franchise. After all, Spider-Gwen was introduced in the first film before being set to join the spinoff.

Of course, it’s just as possible this has no relation to the sequel and Silk’s way of wearing a face mask was just the best suggestion Miller could offer his producing partner. It may not necessarily be indicative of which Spider-Man characters will be in Spider-Verse 2. Still, Sony and the filmmakers have likely already nailed down the script and cast of characters, so Miller probably does know one way or the other whether Silk will show up – it’s just not clear based on this tweet. It would make sense given Silk’s meant to be in female spinoff, though it’s unclear where that movie is in development. Recently, Steinfeld said she was unsure about the status of the Spider-Verse all-female spinoff, but Sony may be simply focusing on Spider-Verse 2 for now. Setting up that spinoff by introducing Silk in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 could happen, but we’ll have to wait for real confirmation, not just a tweet about face masks, to know for sure.
