A series adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles is in development with Disney+, according to reports. Beloved children’s book series, The Spiderwick Chronicles, written and illustrated by Holly Black and Tony DiTerzilli, saw its first volume, The Field Guide, published in 2003. Four additional books were published in the series, including The Seeing Stone (2003), Lucinda’s Secret (2003), The Ironwood Tree (2004), and The Wrath of Mulgarath (2004). There was also a spinoff series called Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles, consisting of three novels. The best-selling fantasy books have proven hugely popular with both young and adult audiences.

The books have already had a feature film adaptation, with the 2008 movie, The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was released by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, and helmed by 500 Days of Summer producer Mark Waters. The film was generally well received by critics, and grossed more than $160 million at the box office. Starring English actor Freddie Highmore, as well as Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Nolte, and Seth Rogen, the movie follows three siblings who move to New England with their mother, where they discover a magical field guide to fairies and encounter a range of magical creatures, both good and evil. And now the story will get the long-form treatment, by way of a series.

According to reports in Variety, Disney+ has big plans for a Spiderwick Chronicles show, which the streaming platform announced as part of Disney Plus Day, along with other projects including Baymax!, Disenchanted, and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 3, as well as with the first samples of artwork from the live-action series. Take a look below at some of the pictures the company has released to give a snippet of what audiences can expect from this upcoming adaptation:

So far, no casting information has been given, and there is no date for release either, so fans should expect an update on this from Disney+ in the coming year. The upcoming show will be produced by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, with Locke & Key co-developer and writer Aron Eli Coleite serving as showrunner. The Daybreak co-creator will also be an executive producer on the show, along with Black, DiTerzilli, Jeremy Bell, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, D.J. Goldberg, and Julie Kane-Ritsch, who co-produced the 2008 movie adaptation.

The fact that Black and DiTerzilli are on board as executive producers is good news for fans who may have been concerned about not getting a faithful adaptation, and, encouragingly, Disney+ has dubbed the project a “modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure,” which sums up the books pretty well. With plenty of source material to choose from, having the two creators working as part of the team should ensure that the adaptation is as faithful as possible. Whether the show is set to be a miniseries or a regular series remains to be seen, but there are plenty of books that can be used for the adaptation, so it is possible the show can span multiple seasons. Based on the images, The Spiderwick Chronicles could be just the show Disney+ needs to compete with Amazon Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time series, and the new Netflix season of The Witcher.
