Spiritfarer from developer Thunder Lotus is an action-platformer indie game mixed with a management simulation that has you as the player helping spirits come to terms with the afterlife and leading them to a place in which they can come to terms with their own mortality.

The game mixes moments of sincere empathy with heart-wrenching emotional realizations, all while delivering melodic and melancholy gameplay. The game has plenty of upgrades to find, but it may be hard knowing where to find them all.

7 Double Jump

Spiritfarer is a game that isn’t exactly focused on being a full-fledged platformer but does feature many elements that make that type of traversal important. Like other games with a jump mechanic, you’ll learn that the ability to double jump can be unlocked at the first shrine you visit.

The Double Jump shrine is located in Hummingberg, the first major town you’ll visit. To unlock it, and any other shrine ability, you must have two Obols in your possession, an item Spirits give Stella in order to take passage on her boat.

6 Glide

When you first use the double jump ability, you’ll notice Stella grabbing her giant hat mid-air. This is a tease of the second ability you’ll unlock, called Glide, which will let Stella glide in the air if you hold the A button at the apex of her jump.

In the Furogawa region west of Hummingberg there’s an island with the same name as the region that’s home to the Glide shrine. By paying two Opals, you will be able to glide when jumping, but also unlock the ability to use the Air Draft locations that will shoot Stella into the air, so she can access new areas of exploration.

5 Zipline

Up in the icy and snowy northern parts of the Spiritfarer map, you can come across the third upgrade shrine in the game. It is located on the island of Nordweiler, and it will give Stella the ability to use the Zipline ability, which opens traversal via wires.

By holding up on either the analog stick or directional pad/d-pad, you’ll be able to glide on wires placed in various mines, towns, and natural landscapes. By jumping near the end of a zipline you’ll also receive a nice speed boost on the exit, allowing for more dynamic movement.

4 Bounce

The Bounce ability is one that doesn’t seem all that important until you understand how many umbrellas and balcony canopies are built into towns. Being able to thrust Stella into the air by jumping on them will make the top of giant buildings accessible.

This upgrade is located at a shrine in Oxbury, which is a town located in the Southeast part of the Spiritfarer map. You will need the Rock Destroyer ship upgrade in order to access this part of the map.

3 Dash

Overall, Spiritfarer is a game that lets you play at your own pace and never pushes the idea of speed, so a Dash ability seems odd at first. The real reason for this ability is to assist you in the Spirit-specific events on the ship, as well as letting you jump farther distances when exploring towns and other areas for chests and other secrets.

The Dash ability shrine is located in the Greymist Peaks, an area in the Northeast of the map, accessible with the Mist Cleaner 1000 ship upgrade.

2 Light Burst

The last two upgrades on this list are a bit more involved than their previous counterparts. In order to get the coordinates for the Hidden Shrine that has the Light Burst ability, you’ll need to work through the Spirit named Buck’s questline.

He’ll eventually give Stella the location of this shrine and the Light Burst ability will be used during his event where you must use the Light Burst power to vanquish orcs on the boat to collect XP potion items. This ability can also be used to collect other items in the events held by other Spirits on the ship.

1 Improved Tools

The last shrine is called the Lost Shrine and will be the location found on a treasure map that you can purchase from the traveling merchant named Francis. He’ll have an errand called “Saturday Night Shopping List,” which, when completed, will reward you with this map.

The Lost Shrine will gift Stella with improved tools that not only make fishing, mining, and other things much more efficient, but allow Stella to harvest additional resources from deposits. For instance, she can get one diamond every time she mines a coal deposit.
