As all SpongeBob fans know, “‘F’ is for friends who do stuff together.” It will soon be time to put that statement to work in SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, specifically speaking to the upcoming game’s multiplayer horde mode.

In a new trailer showcasing the brand-new mode – which will be available to play online or offline with up to two players – we get our first solid look at the mode’s gameplay and everything that players can expect when the game releases on June 23rd.

Robo-Squidward is the main villain featured in the trailer, with the playable characters of SpongeBob, Sandy, Plankton, Mr. Krabs, (regular) Squidward, Patrick, and Gary the Snail shown running amok in the chaos that horde mode will bring.

Each playable character will come with their own special combat abilities – like SpongeBob swinging his spatula or Patrick belly-bumping enemies – while they navigate 26 islands – and multiple waves per island – throughout the mode.

Besides battling enemies (and likely Robo-Squidward himself at some point), various platforming mechanics appear to make up the rest of the chaotic horde mode action, such as jumping from platform to platform, avoiding area of effect attacks and rockets, and flipping switches.

It seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to only include up to two players in horde mode, instead of four, especially since local (and online) couch co-op party games are all the rage right now; most of which allow up to four players and don’t seem to differ that much from the horde mode footage. This could eventually be an added feature in a future patch, though. At least, we can hope.

We’re coming down to the wire for the game’s release. Based on everything we’ve seen so far, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated not only seems like it will live up to the original game, it could end up being even better.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will release on June 23rd for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
