Have you been playing Wordle and thought something was missing? Specifically, have you thought that the word game would serve better as a battle royale? If so, I have some good news for you. A new clone of Wordle, Squabble, adds a battle royale mode among other features to the simple word-guessing game.

Just like Wordle, Squabble requires players to guess a five-letter word where wrong letters are blacked out, correct letters are highlighted green, and letters in the word but not the right place is in yellow. However, unlike Wordle, Squabble lets players see each other’s screens as they all attempt to solve the word. But there’s more, players are continuously suffering damage. Getting the right letter will heal the player, prolong their chances, and inflict damage on their opponents. A wrong guess damages you, as will being too slow to guess. The game doesn’t end until only one player is left alive.

Squabble offers two modes to choose from. In Blitz mode, you play a match against two to five players. Meanwhile, Squabble Royale can support up to 99 players. Both allow players to either join a randomly assembled room or send out a code for friends to join.

The game also offers several features to enhance play. A replay feature serves as the stereotypical “kill cam” in traditional battle royale games. You will be treated to the sheer panic that other players experience as they get four letters of the word correct and freeze on what that fifth one could be. Plus, when players are eliminated, they will receive a large red “X” to really drive home their failure.

Of course, Squabble is not the only Wordle-like game to come out of the original’s popularity. Several spinoffs are floating around the Internet that offer a unique spin on the game. One such game, Nerdle, offers a math equation in place of a word. Meanwhile, Globle has players trying to guess which country has been picked as opposed to a word. There are a ton of clones out there to choose from, though I must admit that Squabble scratches both my love for guessing words and my competitive bloodlust.
