John Dorie’s death on Fear the Walking Dead was one of the most heartbreaking of the series. A fan-favorite character, Dorie was the lovable, sweet, kind cowboy who gave every episode a western feel. He was skilled with a gun, deeply in love with his girlfriend and eventual wife June, and protective of his friends. Following the Dorie-centric episode that led to his demise in season six, it’s tough not to recall some of the character’s best moments.

And there were a lot of them, from the moment he was introduced to that touching episode when he first met June (then “Laura”) to the discovery of who he was pre-apocalypse and how he acquired such amazing skills with a gun. Fans of the character may be looking to take a walk down memory lane to recall some of those best moments.

10 When He Met Morgan

One of Dorie’s best scenes was the very moment he was introduced to the series. He met Morgan Jones and their journey to becoming best friends began.

Dorie immediately showed his character by not only making small talk with Jones but also inviting him to come sit with him and even offering food. In a full-circle moment, he then urged Jones not to take off on his own in the same way that Jones urged Dorie not to do the same in his final episode on the show.

9 When He Met June

The entire episode about how Dorie met June (a.k.a. “Laura”), and their budding romance, was among his best moments and easily helped catapult him to becoming the best character on the show. Seeing how quickly he fell for her, how patient, how honest and true he was with her, was heartwarming.

He fixed up her wounds, gave her his bed, ate meals with her, and even offered her a pair of boots, despite her reluctance. The genuine sweetness he showed towards her is what convinced June, despite the walls she had put up, to open up in some way to him.

8 Anytime He Handed Out Hard Candies

Dorie visited the local store by his cabin time and time again, never taking more than he really needed but always stocking up on hard candies. He would keep them in his pocket and present them as a peace offering or a gift to those with whom he crossed paths.

It was such a simple yet thoughtful gesture that showed just the kind of man he was. It was a way to show that Dorie could be trusted. And many times, it worked.

7 Keeping The Scrabble Pieces

Dorie played Scrabble day in and day out by himself until he met June. After revealing that he loved her, she disappeared the following day, leaving the Scrabble tiles to spell out “I love you too I’m sorry.”

It was a sweet story when it was revealed that John kept the tiles. But more so was how it was revealed. After being shot while jumping in front of June to save her, it turns out he had them in his front jacket pocket, and the fact they slowed the bullet might very well have saved his life.

6 Renting Videos From The Store

On Dorie’s weekly visits to the store by his cabin, he picked up essential supplies and also looked through the selection of movies to pick one to watch. But the best part was the video rental list that was still hanging on the wall from before the apocalypse.

Dorie would always fill out the sheet with his name, the date, the movie he rented, and even his thoughts on the film, even though he knew that he was likely the only person who would ever see it.

5 Caring For Charlie

Even after Charlie had killed Nick, Dorie and June took it upon themselves to take her in. And Dorie, especially, went out of his way to try and help her come out of her shell and make her feel wanted and forgiven. It was one of those lighter moments that fans hope to see more of in season six.

One of the sweetest moments between the two was when Dorie created a handmade game of Scrabble to play with her. He sat and talked with her, trying to help her through her grief by relaying his own story of having done something bad that he felt guilty about and had to get past. Even though the talk didn’t work and Charlie tried to run away anyway, it was a sweet fatherly moment.

4 When He Built A Boat

Dorie was marooned on an island with Victor Strand in one of the best episodes of season 4. While Strand was drowning his sorrows in alcohol, Dorie kept his wits about him and tried his best to first fashion a raft, then a makeshift boat using parts from an overturned pick-up truck.

He not only succeeded but also made a truck horn and found a way to convince Strand to hop aboard, telling him he could continue to drink on the boat if he really wanted to.

3 Shooting Off The Finger

One of the more talked about scenes from the show pertaining to Dorie was that time he shot a man’s finger off in a Western-themed episode of the fifth season. He was a great distance away from the man and he warned the man not to reach for his gun. As soon as the man did, however, in that split second, Dorie shot straight at the trigger finger.

It’s one thing to be a great shot but that scene, believable or not, took Dorie’s skill to the next level. He then helped the man while interrogating him to find out what happened with Naomi/June.

2 Helping Dwight With Sherry

If anyone could understand Dwight’s obsession with finding his wife Sherry once he appeared as a crossover character on Fear the Walking Dead, it would be Dorie. He spent a lot of time searching for June before he even knew her real name.

Dorie makes a tough decision to initially not share the details of the note he found from Sherry telling Dwight to stop looking for her. He did this for selfless reasons, to prevent Dwight from losing hope. Even though this episode was ranked among the worst of the show to date, it was still one of Dorie’s most thoughtful moments.

1 The Split Trick Shot

The most unbelievable shot Dorie took with his gun was that split shot that killed two walkers at once. To clear a path for Dwight to escape despite only having a single bullet left, Dorie instructed Dwight to raise his ax. Then, he shot it in just the right spot so the bullet split, killing two walkers simultaneously.

It was one of those one-in-a-million shots that likely even the most skilled gunslinger could not pull off. It’s actually a common old wild west trick, which is what inspired the showrunners to include it in the largely wild western-themed episode.
