Announced as the first thing during the pre-show, The Game Awards waited until just before the show began to give us its teased new trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Focusing solely on Cloud, it was a short little look at the mysterious, moody swordsman we all know and love. It wasn’t exactly new for fans of the original, but it still showcased some wonderful visuals and had a roaring soundtrack to go with it.

As to be expected, the trailer goes over the beginning of Cloud’s journey in Final Fantasy 7. Arriving with his comrades from Avalanche, Cloud and Barret set out to explore a nuclear reactor and “free” the people of Midgar from the government that is enslaving them. It’s domestic terrorism for the whole family!

It’s not the most exciting thing around, but any new look at Final Fantasy 7 is fun. For those unaware, this remake is shaping up to be an excellent reimagining of the original PS1 classic. While it’s shifting gears towards being action-based, a psuedo-turn-based mode is being included to give fans a more classic gameplay style.

As was shown at E3, the motorcycle segments from the original are also being included here. It stands to reason they’ll be a bit more than simply riding in a straight line and hitting Square a lot. There might even be some new mini-games focused on the driving mechanics, which would be a great way to flesh out Midgar a bit.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is scheduled for a March 3, 2020, release on PS4. After a year of exclusivity, it will be heading to other platforms (likely the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC). Releasing in the busiest month of 2020 would normally be a death sentence, but Final Fantasy is large enough to weather that storm.

Whether or not the game lives up to the hype remains to be seen. Everything looks solid enough, but there’s a chance the episodic nature of this remake will put people off. We also don’t know how the subsequent episodes will be released, coming as DLC to this first one or as completely separate games.

Even if it takes a few more years, this first one looks to restart the story with a bang.
