When Nintendo announced Sephiroth would be the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character, a common thought among fans was the character has the potential to be the strongest in the entire game. While Sephiroth doesn’t officially release until December 22nd, it looks like he might already be the best fighter in Smash. On Thursday, Nintendo posted their usual pre-release character playthrough highlighting Sephiroth’s entire move set. However, the playthrough ended with an unexpected, special announcement. Players who’ve already purchased Sephiroth’s DLC can fight him early in the Sephiroth Challenge. Anyone who’s already gone through the struggle that is The Sephiroth Challenge can confirm how good this character is.
The thing that stands out most about Sephiroth in Smash Bros. is his sword. He seriously might have the longest reach of any character in the game, although the middle of his sword does the most damage. The hit box on his up smash is seriously large. Do not get caught in the air above Sephiroth, otherwise players are liable to get juggled and quickly eliminated. His sword isn’t the only thing that gives Sephiroth range as his side special, an attachable explosive, can be a pain to deal with. The range on the attack isn’t great, but it’s something that should be avoided whenever possible. The explosives stack, so Sephiroth can attach five at a time, which can be deadly in mid air.
In addition to his range, SSBU’s Sephiroth is also fast and powerful. Any one of his smash attacks have the launch power to send an opponent flying. His neutral special is a fireball he can charged to incredible explosive potential. The attack’s range shrinks the longer it’s held, but if charged fully, it creates one of the most explosive attacks in all of Smash. Sephiroth’s up special is great for recovery and dealing heavy damage. The move can be aimed directionally, much like Fox’s up special, but Sephiroth’s can be charged for an extra boost. Simply hitting up smash will be a single slash attack, but charging it turns it into eight quick and violent slashes. On top all this, when Sephiroth’s health is low, he goes into One Winged Angel mode. This transformation makes him faster, stronger, and gives him an extra mid air jump. His Final Smash can hit up to three people at once, deals near lethal damage, and inflicts status effects.
Smash’s Sephiroth Does Have Some Drawbacks, But Not Many
For as good of a Smash Bros. character Sephiroth is, he isn’t perfect, and there are a number of things that somewhat hold the character back. While his sword has insane reach, Sephiroth’s special attacks don’t have the best range. His neutral special can hit from nearly anywhere, but it pales in comparison to the damage the charged versions, which don’t travel far at all. Nearly all of Sephiroth’s special attacks in SSBU can be charged, which opens up a window of opportunity for opponents, although it’s slight. Sephiroth’s down special is a counter, but it’s not the best. It can only block attacks from the front and there’s a limit to how strong of an attack it can counter. If Sephiroth tries to counter an attack that’s too powerful, his counter breaks and he takes the damage.
One of Sephiroth’s biggest weaknesses in Smash Bros. seem to be grapples. He takes good damage from them and his own grapple attacks aren’t all that strong. One of the best ways to beat the Sephiroth Challenge is by using a fast attacker with good reach on their grabs. Donkey Kong has become one of the go-to characters for beating the challenge, as he can pick up characters with ease and walk off the map. Another drawback to Sephiroth is that his up special has a clear tell. Three arrows appear in front of Sephiroth in the direction he’s about to attack, so opponents know what’s coming and from where.
