Fans have reacted angrily to an update from Cloud Imperium Games about the new roadmap for Star Citizen and its singleplayer campaign Squadron 42. The multiplayer space simulator is seen as a spiritual successor to the 2003 title Freelancer and is being led by former Wing Commander designer Chris Roberts. According to the developer, the game will feature space trading and ship-to-ship combat in a persistent universe.

Star Citizen is one of the most successful crowdfunding games of all time. Although development initially began in 2010, Chris Roberts started a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 that raised some $2 million. Through Cloud Imperium Games’ own website, the developer continued to raise funds from backers and is now estimated to have crowdfunded more than $300 million. The project has also received outside investment in the region of $60 million. However, this excessive budget has not stopped a string of delays to the game, which was originally scheduled to launch in 2016.

Fans and backers of Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have reacted negatively to a new update from Cloud Imperium Games. Responses in a thread on the official subreddit for the games reveal that most players are upset about the lack of transparency and progress. Many posts reference the fact that the developer has seemingly announced a roadmap for when the official roadmap will be ready. The studio had apologized for delays to the revised roadmap but said that “because [it] is still very much in development, we can’t share as much about it as [we] would like.” Some of the responses to the Cloud Imperium Games statement can be seen below, which shows how disillusioned some people have become with the project.

Squadron 42 was originally meant to be the singleplayer campaign to Star Citizen. Set in the same persistent universe as the multiplayer title, it is now set to be a standalone product that will launch separately. Like Star Citizen, this project has seen numerous delays and its release date has been pushed back from 2014 numerous times. This is in large part down to the fact that so many additional features have been added to Squadron 42. A beta has been announced for 2020, although it is still unclear exactly when it will become available. Cloud Imperium Games and Foundry 42 have since confirmed that the game will have an episodic launch.

It is understandable why so many fans and backers of Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are upset. Both projects have now been in development for more than eight years and there is no end in sight for when they will actually launch. There are legitimate concerns about whether both titles will ever actually release, as feature creep has led to an endless array of delays and postponements. The fact that Cloud Imperium Games seems incapable of even publishing a roadmap, which was meant to be available years ago, does not bode well.
