One of the most significant attributes shared amongst the heroes of Star Wars is selflessness, of which there is no better example than when a protagonist sacrifices themselves. Since 1977, heroes in Star Wars have given their lives so that others can live or even so that movements like the rebellion or Resistance can fight on and save the Galaxy from tyranny.

These moments often add weight to the story, as well as an emotional layer to the legacy of the character. Rather than die in battle or be betrayed, they give their lives knowing that their friends and family get to live and that the Galaxy is safer in their hands.

10 Ahsoka Tano

“Twilight Of The Apprentice” remains one of the best hours Star Wars has ever produced, and most of that is down to Ahsoka Tano and Darth Vader. Their duel is as legendary as it is heartbreaking.

As the temple closes around the pair, Ahsoka pushes Ezra out and stays by Anakin/Vader, refusing to leave him. As fans now know, Ahsoka never died in this duel. However, she only survived due to wild circumstances regarding time and the Force. Vader was seconds from killing her. She gave up her own life, or tried at least, to save Ezra and Kanan, and stay with her former brother.

9 Ezra Bridger

Star Wars: Rebels produced a few sacrifices, and one closes out the story of the liberation of Lothal in the series finale as Ezra takes himself and Thrawn to who-knows-where in hyperspace, his most iconic scene in Star Wars Rebels and a fitting yet an ambiguous end to his arc.

It is clear Ezra is not dead, considering Ahsoka and Sabine went to look for him. However, Ezra did not know he would not die. In fact, it would be easy to assume he did die. To save his friends and family, to liberate Lothal, and to keep the Galaxy safe from Thrawn, he used the Purrgils to take them deep into hyperspace.

8 Rogue One

The characters in Rogue One were more or less doomed from the start. Many fans did not think Disney and Lucasfilm would pull off a massacre of all the main characters, but it ended up being necessary.

Each member of Rogue One, Jyn Erson, Cassian Andor, K-2SO, Bodhi Rook, Baze Malbus, and Chirrut îmwe died to get the Death Star plans to the rebellion. Their sacrifice eventually saved the Galaxy and helped the rebellion defeat the Empire once and for all. They gave their lives for a cause, for each other, and for hope.

7 Ben Solo

For most of the sequel trilogy, fans wondered and speculated about the fate of Kylo Ren. Would he be redeemed like Vader? Would he turn good again, and would he, like Vader, die as a result?

Ben Solo, now on the light side of the Force once more, gave his life for Rey’s, draining his life force so she could live. Fans still debate the decision to have Ben die, but it happened, and his sacrifice allowed Rey to live on and, presumably, start the Jedi order anew.

6 Obi-Wan Kenobi

Sacrifice was established as an integral part of Star Wars when the franchise debuted over forty years ago as Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the most popular and brilliant characters of the franchise, gave his life in a duel against his former apprentice.

Choosing to allow Vader to strike him down and become one with the Force, Obi-Wan dies, allowing Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, and the droids to finally escape the Death Star. Obi-Wan’s sacrifice was admirable; while it was maybe not the most upsetting at the time, it was a fitting and moving end for one of the saga’s best characters after a lot of hardship.

5 IG-11

Not many people could have predicted just how emotionally impactful and how successful The Mandalorian would go on to be. The emotional backbone of the series is, of course, Din and Grogu’s relationship, but that is not where all the impact comes from.

IG-11 sacrificing himself via self-destruct to save the lives of Grogu and Din and the other heroes was a beautiful and iconic scene in The Mandalorian. The droid even seemed to make Din softer towards his kind. It is amazing that a moment like this could be so emotional, and it is a testament to how well the show built up its story and characters.

4 Various Clones

A significant idea and theme in The Clone Wars series is the individuality of the clones, giving having a purpose in the Galaxy outside of being expendable numbers in a war. Fans grew close and attached to a variety of different clones throughout the show.

Many of them sacrificed themselves. Fives gave his life to uncover the plot of the inhibitor chips, Hardcase gave his life for his brothers to survive on Umbara, 99 did the same, Keeli died alongside Ima-Gun Di, Colt and his men gave their lives to protect their Jedi from Grevious and Ventress, Hevy blew himself and various droids up for his Domino Squad brothers, and Thorn and his men stood their ground to the last breath to stop the Separatists on Scipio. With how close fans got to the clones, each one of their deaths hurt.

3 Luke Skywalker

There is still so much controversy and discussion surrounding the arc of Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi, which, to many, is one of the most emotionally satisfying and poetically elegant single-movie stories in Star Wars.

Luke sacrificed himself so that the Resistance could fight on, so hope could win, and so the First Order would be defeated. Looking out on a binary sunset and becoming one with the Force was a beautiful way for the character to go, and, in terms of moving sacrifices and impactful deaths, it is right up there.

2 Anakin Skywalker

Star Wars 10 Most Moving Character Sacrifices

Anakin Skywalker’s redemption remains the greatest in Star Wars. The moment of realization, the moment when Anakin Skywalker and the good within him took over Darth Vader, led to his death, and it was a fitting sacrifice.

Seeing his son nearly killed by Sidious, Anakin returned and killed the Emperor, who, in turn, killed him. Anakin’s final moments, unmasked and vulnerable, were impactful and touching. A truly terrific end for arguably Star Wars’ greatest character.

1 Kanan Jarrus

For as moving and as brilliant as the sacrifices in the Skywalker saga are, there is something truly devastating and excellent about the death and sacrificing of Kanan Jarrus.

Kanan had just rescued Hera, and, while the two were professing their love and getting ready to leave the Imperial base, Pryce destroyed the fuel tank on which Kanan and Hera were standing. The music, the moment of Kanan’s sight coming back, the visual of the flames, and that final moment when Kanan pushes Hera and the escape ship away—all of it came together so perfectly. Kanan has one of the best arcs in Star Wars, as he discovered his role in the Galaxy and found himself in the Force, and this was a heartbreaking yet perfect end for the character.
