Despite his diminutive size, Sebulba left a prodigious impression on those who crossed his path. Known primarily as a quarrelsome podracer around Mos Espa, the Dug had a rich life before and after his fateful encounter with Anakin Skywalker. He first appeared in the novelization for Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace, which was published prior to the film’s release in May of 1999. Sebulba is first introduced in the race that caused Anakin to crash in Watto’s podracer (only mentioned in the film).

His volatile encounter with Anakin and the party of outlanders, including Qui-Gon Jinn and Jar Jar Binks, made him an intimidating secondary villain to shadowy figures like Darth Maul and Darth Sidious. He became a fan favorite, and his background was greatly expanded upon in comics, video games, and animated series.

10 HE WAS ONCE A SLAVE

Dugs on Malastare were subordinate to the Grand Colonists, with all resources diverted to the much taller and much more plentiful beings who colonized the planet.

Sebulba was a slave under their regime, the planet lying enough outside of Republic jurisdiction to freely to operate slaving bays and trading outposts. The only freedom he found was by joining in the most exciting de-regulated sport in the Outer Rim, pod-racing.

Malastare is the homeworld of the Dug, and many of them find their wiry and agile build perfectly suited to racing pods. Sebulba got his start pod-racing in the Vista Harvest Classic, one of the most dangerous tracks in the galaxy, and hosted by the Grand Colonists.

Known as “three-eyed cows” to Dug, they felt unjustly governed by the bipedal species, who had colonized Malastare in 1000 BBY and forced the Dug to congregate in the town of Pixelito.

8 HE FLAUNTED THE LIFESTYLE OF A POD-RACING STAR

By the time Sebulba got to the big leagues on Tatooine and entered into the Boonta Eve Classic, he was beginning to make a name for himself. To further propel his reputation as a pod-racing star, he made sure to flaunt the lifestyle.

He spent his money readily at the Mos Espa cantinas in delicacies, and he frequented many pleasure dens in search of female companionship. He bought the Twi’lek slave girls Anne and Tan Gella to be his personal attendants at his races, further showcasing where he put all his race winnings.

7 HE HELPED THE HUTTS RUN THEIR SLAVE TRADE

Despite having come from a slave background himself, Sebulba had no problem helping the Hutts run a slave trade on Tatooine. His primary point of contact was Gardulla the Hutt, the same Hutt who sold Watto Anakin and Schmi Skywalker.

The sting of his defeat at the Boonta Eve Classic at the hands of the Skywalker slave boy reminded him of himself, and though he hated losing, he couldn’t help but admire the boy’s grit and determination. He would go on to purchase Anakin’s podracer from Qui-Gon Jinn.

6 HE RACED A HEAVILY MODIFIED POD

Sebulba raced only the best pods, and his Plug F Mammoth was top of the line. Produced by Collor Pondrat, where it sacrificed aerodynamics it was long on thrust. Its Split-X turbojet chem-based engine made it one of the fastest of its class.

Against regulations on Tatooine, he swapped out a number of components for ray guns, flamethrowers, and all manner of melee weapons to guarantee that if his racing talent didn’t secure his victory, a little underhanded help would.

5 HIS POD WAS INSPIRED BY A FERRARI

George Lucas’s popular American Graffiti was all about drag racing hot rods, and his love for the activity heavily influenced the pod-racing scene in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. He envisioned it like an amalgamation of a street race and an international tour of exotic cars.

He tasked John Knoll, one of several visual effects supervisors on the film, to work with sound engineer Ben Burtt to come up with the signature look and sounds for each pod. The sound for Anakin’s pod was modeled after a high-end Porsche, and Sebulba’s was “basically a Ferrari that a guy kindly punched a hole in his muffler for” so that it would have “that really low, throaty growl”.

4 HE TRIED TO HAVE THE BOONTA EVE CLASSIC FIXED

After the conclusion of the Boonta Eve Classic, evidence surfaced that Sebulba might have been in league with Jabba the Hutt. Sebulba had a pit droid named DUMB-4 take a note to Jabba indicating that Sebulba would be racing dirty.

It’s possible that Jabba had certain bets riding on Sebulba winning, and therefore would turn a blind eye on how he managed to do so. Qui-Gon Jinn seemed to think that the Hutts weren’t inclined to such unsportsmanlike conduct, but the influence of a Hutt would have been the only way Sebulba could cheat to win without the fear of repercussions.

3 HE HAD A FAMILY

After losing the Boonta Eve Classic, Sebulba took Anakin’s podracer and returned to his homeworld of Malastare, where he entered in the Vista Harvest Classic once again and triumphed. After a long winning streak, he took some deserved time off to raise his son Hekula.

Hekula would go on to travel to Tatooine and compete in the Boonta Eve Classic, determined to make a name for himself in the famous race in 26 BBY. His debut was terrible, and he destroyed his father’s pod in the process, causing Sebulba to forbid him from ever racing again. Hekula’s son Pugwis would try to emulate his grandfather’s success but never come close.

2 HE CHALLENGED ANAKIN TO A REMATCH

The loss to Anakin Skywalker never sat well with Sebulba, and in 24 BBY, he challenged him to a rematch. By this time, Skywalker was a full-fledged Jedi Knight, with a mastery over the Force and incredible reflexes.

Unfortunately, nothing was known about whether the Jedi or the Dugg actually ended up competing, as the contest was lost to the annals of galactic history (but hinted at in Star Wars: The Clones Wars).

1 HIS APPEARANCE HAD A VARIETY OF INSPIRATIONS

The curious appearance of the Dug came from an amalgamation of a camel and a spider, with an outfit meant to resemble a medieval suit of armor. To make him appear even more eccentric and disturbing, he wore goggles similar to those used by early racecar drivers that heavily magnified his eyes.

His personality and body movements were taken from the circus performers who walked on their hands in the film Freaks, as well as the intensity of Major Strasser in Casablanca. Other Dugs, seen in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones eating at Dex’s diner, were inspired by other animals such as leopards and zebras.
