The Star Wars sequel trilogy, in all of its divisiveness and controversy, introduced some fascinating, if not always fantastic, characters to the canon of the franchise. Characters like Rey, Finn, and Poe are all fantastic, but from a character arc, characterization, and performance standpoint, Kylo Ren is the star of the trilogy.

He is the villain of the trilogy but is a layered villain with much more to him than just being big bad emo. He was a developed character, and we understood why he was so terrible, leading to moments where he resonated with the audience alongside inducing hatred.

10 Felt Bad For Him – Luke’s Moment Of Weakness

Kylo obviously has a differing memory from what truly happened that fateful night with Luke, or at least that’s what he told Rey.

Nevertheless, what really did happen with Luke’s moment of weakness still made us understand Kylo’s fall when coupled with the knowledge that he was getting seduced by Snoke, and had a darkness within him.

9 Hated Him – Destruction Of The Hosnian System

There is an issue with The Force Awakens relying on another planet killer, but just because it is familiar, does not make it any less evil.

Kylo, Hux, and the First Order wiped out an entire Star System with Starkiller Base, without remorse, without empathy, just out of evil and a craving for power.

8 Felt Bad For Him – When We See How Torn He Is

Star Wars 5 Times We Felt Bad For Kylo Ren (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

There are various moments throughout the trilogy where we see Kylo in a vulnerable state, and in those moments, he is at his most relatable and understandable.

A lot of his moments with Rey in The Last Jedi highlight how torn he is, and the level of his emotional anguish. There is also his moment where he simply cannot kill Leia, and we see there is something inside him, some semblance of good.

7 Hated Him – Slaughtering Villages & Torturing People

Star Wars 5 Times We Felt Bad For Kylo Ren (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

Our first introduction to Kylo is him slaughtering Lor San Tekka and ordering the massacre of a village on Jakku. We also see him in The Rise Of Skywalker slaughter the Alzamec of Winsit.

Along those same lines is the torture Kylo inflicts on Rey and Poe in The Force Awakens, it is hard to believe those were the first people to be tortured by Kylo in that room, and all of these violent acts prompted loathing towards Kylo.

6 Felt Bad For Him – His Sacrifice

When Kylo Ren is defeated, and Ben Solo is redeemed, it leads to a few fantastic moments. Unfortunately, fans did not get much of the last blood-related Skywalker.

When Rey dies only to be saved by Ben, it is perhaps his most heroic act and one that will likely aid the Galaxy in years to come. It is the final act of his redemption, and the fact he had to die at that moment garners a lot of sympathies.

5 Hated Him – Becoming Supreme Leader

Before he sacrificed himself for Rey, though, he betrayed her expectations and those of some fans.

After killing Snoke and, alongside Rey, battling the Praetorian Guards, Kylo urged Rey to join him, rather than him turning good. He then becomes Supreme Leader of the First Order, and it seemed in that moment as if there was no coming back for him.

4 Felt Bad For Him – Leia’s Death

The catalyst for Kylo’s end and Ben’s reemergence came when he was battling Rey on Kef Bir, and he hears his mother call out to him in the Force.

When audiences see Kylo’s reaction to what everyone knows is Leia’s death, it is the face of a son, who loves his mother, and has just lost her. He could not even react to getting stabbed, he was shocked, and everybody was heartbroken.

3 Hated Him – Going After The Resistance On Crait

Following his taking up of the mantle of Supreme Leader, Kylo set course for Crait to finish the freshly begun war with the Resistance.

There was not much of the Resistance left, and the ruthlessness of what Kylo had planned was truly deplorable and had Luke not turned up for a last heroic act, the Resistance would have gotten wiped out.

2 Felt Bad For Him – Memory With Han

Star Wars 5 Times We Felt Bad For Kylo Ren (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

One of the undoubted highlights of The Rise Of Skywalker, and the sequel trilogy in general, was the surprising appearance of Han Solo one more time.

Coming to Kylo in the form of a memory, fans see a familiar conversation pan out, with the same torn emotion, but with less hatred and more regret, guilt, and knowledge that the right thing must get done.

1 Hated Him – Killed Han

Of course, this memory comes from what may well be Kylo Ren’s most heinous act, the murder of his own father.

Fans could kind of tell that The Force Awakens would see the end of the iconic scoundrel, but it did not make it hurt less, especially from his son. The only way Kylo could have been more hated than at this moment would be if he did kill Leia.
