Microsoft has redesigned the official Xbox website in celebration of the brand’s 20th anniversary, and it’s reminiscent of the original Xbox 360 dashboard. The company has been commemorating 20 years of Xbox with events, games and gear throughout 2021, with more reportedly still to come.

The Xbox 360 dashboard has gone through quite a few changes in its lengthy lifetime. When the console launched in 2005, it simply included the classic blade menu as its dashboard. That changed in 2008 with the “New Xbox Experience,” which introduced avatars and completely overhauled the dashboard into many different layers. Then came the “Metro” dashboard in 2011, and that was the beginning of the blocky Xbox dashboards players are familiar with today. The Xbox Series X and S support dynamic backgrounds as well, such as the new one included with the 20th anniversary controller.

Over on the official Xbox site, Microsoft has given visitors another throwback for the 20th anniversary. The usual web design has been replaced with a nostalgic blade menu that emulates the Xbox 360’s well-known original dashboard. Links now have a bubbly mid-2000s look to them, stretching all the way down the page. Unfortunately, the memorable “whoosh” sound effect is not part of the redesign.

Of course, the 20th anniversary of Xbox is also the 20th anniversary of Halo, and Microsoft is well aware of that. The company has been paying tribute to the seminal series with special anniversary merchandise and a mural celebrating Halo’s past and future. There’s been plenty of promotional tie-ins for Halo this year – not only because of its anniversary, but because of the impending and highly anticipated release of Halo Infinite. This can be seen across industries, too, with Halo Infinite snacks and drinks already showing up in stores.

Microsoft most likely has more to show for the 20th anniversary of Xbox and Halo, especially heading into the final few months of 2021. It’s still extremely difficult to find an actual Xbox Series X or S, though, since worldwide supply chain shortages haven’t been getting any better. Despite all that, the company seems determined to make 2021 a stand-out year for fans in many other ways. By popular demand, Microsoft is making Xbox Series X-themed fridges and will begin taking preorders for them as early as next week. As for the rest of the year, players will have to wait and see what Xbox has planned.
