The War of the Bounty Hunters has begun, sweeping Marvel’s Star Wars titles, and Boba Fett is the most wanted man in the galaxy, only escaping the latest attempt on his life thanks to a secret weapon: his gauntlets. Boba Fett, one of the most beloved characters in all of Star Wars, is the galaxy’s most dangerous bounty hunter. He’s best known for his iconic Beskar-steel Mandalorian armor, which keeps him well protected. Armed to the teeth and covered in gadgets, he could kill his targets in a thousand ways, but when in dire straights it turns out his gauntlet keypad is one of his most dangerous tools.
War of the Bounty Hunters is a crossover event set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The inciting incident for the event is the theft of Han Solo, alive and frozen in carbonite, from Boba Fett as he is on his way to deliver Han to Jabba the Hutt. Jabba assumes Boba Fett sold Han’s body when he learns someone else is in possession of it, prompting him to place a large bounty, open to any and all bounty hunters, on Boba in retaliation.
In Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha, Boba Fett finds himself in a gladiatorial arena, battling enemies to the death in a tournament. When he goes up against the champion, a spider-like warrior, she gets the better of him and stabs him through the chest, and he survives only by using his gauntlets to activate the rocket that fell from his back during the fight. Later, in Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #1, Boba finds himself held at gunpoint by two skilled bounty hunters determined to collect the bounty on his head. Not only does he use his gauntlets to fire his backpack rocket while held at gunpoint, but he then activates the weapons on his nearby ship. When the chips are down he relies heavily on his gauntlets, proving they are the most important weapon in his repertoire, precisely because his enemies consider him unarmed when he’s anything but.
Part of what makes Boba Fett a fan-favorite is the arsenal he has on display at all times. Almost always in hand is his powerful Blas Tech EE-3 Rifle. Peaking menacingly over his shoulders is his back-mounted rocket, attached to a jetpack which keeps him in control of any situation. His signature helmet is equipped with a wide range of sensors and communications technologies. Even his knee pads have the ability to fire rockets and poison darts. But hunting bounties in space means never knowing exactly what threat you’ll face next, which is why it makes sense for Boba to have connected so much of his weaponry to be controlled through his gauntlets, giving him the element of surprise.
But just because Boba easily dispatched these early challengers doesn’t mean he’s safe, and War of the Bounty Hunters will test him beyond the help of any single gadget or tactic. With major Star Wars figures like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Jabba himself all intent on collecting Han’s body and going through Boba Fett to do it, the super-skilled bounty hunter will need more than a few tricks up his sleeve to come out ahead.
