J.J. Abrams confirms Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker introduces new Force powers. Arguably the franchise’s most defining element, the Force has continuously evolved over the past four decades. The sequel trilogy’s already added some fresh concepts to the lore, such as Kylo Ren stopping a blaster bolt midair in The Force Awakens and Luke Skywalker’s self-sacrificial Force projection during The Last Jedi’s climax. The Last Jedi also included the famous “Force Skype” calls between Rey and Kylo, which allowed them to see each other and communicate from opposite ends of the galaxy.

With The Rise of Skywalker wrapping up the saga and concluding an epic chess match between the Jedi and Sith, it comes as no surprise the Force is going to be further explored in the upcoming movie. In particular, Abrams has hinted there’s a distinct reason to explain Rey’s preternatural Force abilities. Since there is a one-year time jump between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, she’s had plenty of time to train and grow stronger. From the sound of it, Rey could be doing some new things with the Force.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Abrams revealed The Rise of Skywalker features new Force powers. Obviously, he couldn’t get into more detail than that, but he did breakdown his reasoning for wanting to go in this direction:

“It was really important that we not just redo the things you’ve seen, but add new elements—which we knew will infuriate some people and thrill others.”

Some fans have taken issue with the sequels’ Force powers (despite certain ones having precedence in Legends), but it’s important to keep in mind adding to the Force isn’t something exclusive to the Disney films. The original trilogy worked to expand what the Force was capable of; The Empire Strikes Back marked the first appearance of Force ghosts, and Return of the Jedi was when Emperor Palpatine debuted Force lightning. So in a way, it would be strange if The Rise of Skywalker kept things stagnant and just rehashed the Force powers fans already know. TV spots have shown there will be familiar abilities on display, like Jedi mind tricks, but it’ll still be fun to see what new things Abrams and the team cooked up.

As for what they have in store, a distinct possibility is something related to Palpatine’s reemergence. Since the villain’s surprise return was confirmed in the first Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer, there has been no shortage of theories concerning the Emperor, many of which involve the Force. Rey and Kylo Ren could also have some new tricks up their sleeves to unveil during an action sequence (perhaps their lightsaber duel). The trick will be to keep things (relatively) grounded so whatever Abrams introduces feels like an organic expansion of what’s come before. The Force has endless possibilities, but it would be a shame if the filmmakers went overboard and jumped the shark at the very end of the saga.
