Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 has set up a number of ongoing plot lines, including a tenuous relationship with the ATCU, and a number of antagonists to Director Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) team, like the new Inhuman Lash (Matthew Willig) and the ever-present threat of Hydra. The rogue organization that at one time infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. is seeing a new resurgence thanks to the leadership of Coulson’s former team member Grant Ward (Brett Dalton).

Ward has been rebuilding the Hydra organization (somewhat in the image of S.H.I.E.L.D., calling himself Director), enlisting the son of Marvel Cinematic Universe villain Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, Werner von Strucker. Still, since Hydra hadn’t been completely destroyed, there are remnants of the organization, and Ward is confronted by one of its remaining members in a new clip from the upcoming episode ‘Among Us Hide…’

The clip (above) introduces Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe) who seems to be a high-ranking official in the Hydra organization – one who is not pleased by Ward’s “gameplay.” However, Ward isn’t bothered by Gideon’s displeasure, indicating that there doesn’t seem to be much in common between the old Hydra and Ward’s still-growing organization.

Though the clip doesn’t reveal much about Gideon – not even his name – Boothe’s character has been confirmed to be the same as the member of the World Security Council he portrayed in The Avengers. Additionally, Marvel TV Head Jeph Loeb has described Gideon as “a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward Would fear,” although it’s obvious Ward has yet to feel that fear in the clip from ‘Among Us Hide…’ Still, Ward does refer to Gideon as “the one all the others were afraid of,” so it seems he’s aware of Gideon’s reputation within Hydra.

As for Hydra, the organization has played a large role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. since the Captain America: The Winter Soldier tie-in episode when it was revealed they had infiltrated much of S.H.I.E.L.D. In season two, Hydra was also searching for answers to the Inhuman artifact, the obelisk, though they were largely taken off the board when Wolfgang von Strucker was killed elsewhere in the MCU in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Although the clip from ‘Among Us Hide…’ seems to imply Gideon is a high-ranking member of Hydra, the character has been described as “a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery.” Whether that indicates he’s a fearsome Hydra official or someone who will betray Ward’s new organization (or both) remains to be seen. However, it may also refer to Gideon’s previous role in the MCU as a member of the World Security Council, on which he served in The Avengers but not Captain America: The Winter Soldier – when, it should be noted, he would have worked with Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), a Hydra operative.

Despite all the possibilities of where Gideon’s loyalties lie, it seems for the time being he’ll be dealing with Ward’s new Hydra and specifically the involvement of Werner von Strucker. Whether he aims to help Ward or tear down the corner of Hydra the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent has managed to rebuild, though, remains to be seen until ‘Among Us Hide…’ premieres.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues next Tuesday with ‘Among Us Hide…’ at 9pm on ABC. Agent Carter season 2 is expected to air during the mid-season break in early 2016.
