Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most beloved characters among the Star Wars fan base, so it makes sense that he’d be popular in-universe in a galaxy far, far away, too. Across nearly half a century’s worth of Star Wars media, Obi-Wan has paired up with such iconic characters as Yoda, Chewbacca, and Ahsoka Tano.

From training Anakin Skywalker in the ways of the Force to passing on that wisdom to Anakin’s long-lost son Luke, Obi-Wan has enjoyed a handful of endearing partnerships in the Star Wars canon.

10 Luke Skywalker

The original 1977 Star Wars movie introduced Obi-Wan as a mentor and something of a father figure to Luke Skywalker. He gave him his father’s old lightsaber and, on the journey to Alderaan, provided him with some early Jedi training that would later be completed by Yoda.

Luke and Obi-Wan’s greatest team-up is when Obi-Wan appears in Luke’s X-wing cockpit as a disembodied ghost to inspire him to use the Force to sink two proton torpedoes into the Death Star’s thermal exhaust port, blowing it up.

9 Commander Cody

Commander Cody gave Obi-Wan a helping hand (and vice versa) throughout a bunch of Clone Wars campaigns. This partnership culminated on Utapau, where the two brought down General Grievous and his droid armies.

After the defeat of Grievous and his Separatist cronies, Obi-Wan and Cody’s friendship came to an abrupt halt as Palpatine told the clones to “execute Order 66.”

8 Dexter Jettster

Introduced in Attack of the Clones, Dexter Jettster is an old friend of Obi-Wan’s. Nicknamed “Dex” by his Jedi pal, Jettster runs a retro ‘50s-style diner in a universe where the 1950s didn’t even take place.

Dexter is a little like an in-the-know supporting character in a hard-boiled noir. He provides Obi-Wan with underground information like the origins of a poison dart when he hits a snag in Jedi investigations.

7 Chewbacca

At the turn of Star Wars’ second act, Obi-Wan takes Luke into the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Mos Eisley Spaceport in search of a pilot who can take them to Alderaan. In the spaceport’s shady cantina, Obi-Wan meets Chewbacca, who introduces him to the captain of the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo.

Whereas Han is standoffish at first, Chewie is friendly and accommodating to the wise Jedi Master from the outset. This warmth would go on to define the iconic Wookiee.

6 Yoda

Following the tragic twists and turns of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan and Yoda return to Coruscant and initially believe that they’re the only two survivors of the Great Jedi Purge.

Realizing that the entire galaxy is at stake and it’s all in the hands of two Sith Lords, Obi-Wan agrees to take on his fallen apprentice Darth Vader while Yoda goes after Darth Sidious. They’re both ultimately unsuccessful, but they gave saving the galaxy their best shot. Decades later, they would co-train Luke as the Jedi’s last hope who could vanquish the Emperor for good.

5 Ahsoka Tano

The central dynamic in The Clone Wars animated series is Anakin’s relationship with his ambitious teenage padawan Ahsoka Tano. But Ahsoka’s relationship with fellow Jedi role model Obi-Wan is just as strong.

Obi-Wan acted as a sort of Jedi “grandfather” to Ahsoka, complementing Anakin’s mentorship. They always had each other’s backs and, if anything, Obi-Wan was a second master contributing to Ahsoka’s Jedi training.

4 Satine Kryze

Obi-Wan was sent to protect Satine Kryze, the Duchess of Mandalore, after several threats were made against her life. Ultimately, much like Anakin and Padmé in Attack of the Clones, this bodyguard dynamic developed into a heartfelt romance.

Although Obi-Wan having a girlfriend goes against the Jedi’s strict code forbidding emotional attachments, Star Wars fans were glad that the fan-favorite warrior found someone and fell in love at one point in his life.

3 R4-P17

When R2-D2 told Luke that he recognized Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan said, “I don’t seem to remember ever owning a droid.” But this could just be because droids are commodities in the Star Wars universe, like a dishwasher or a TV, so their owners don’t get attached to them as closely as fans do.

Despite forgetting all about it, Obi-Wan had a fun relationship with R4-P17, his droid sidekick throughout the Clone Wars. They went into a bunch of battles together – including the eye-popping Battle over Coruscant in the opening sequence of Revenge of the Sith.

2 Qui-Gon Jinn

After the original trilogy presented Obi-Wan as a wise, aging Jedi veteran, the prequel trilogy introduced him as a naive apprentice who still had a lot to learn from his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. In The Phantom Menace’s climactic “Duel of the Fates” set-piece, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon teamed up to take on Darth Maul.

When they were separated by a laser barrier, Qui-Gon couldn’t keep up on his own and got stabbed in the torso. Obi-Wan triumphantly avenged Qui-Gon by using his master’s own weapon to bisect his killer, awesomely making him the first Jedi to defeat a Sith Lord in 1,000 years.

1 Anakin Skywalker

Before Palpatine’s manipulative influence turned Obi-Wan and Anakin into possibly the most troubled master-padawan relationship in Jedi history, they were like a “buddy cop” duo: the jaded veteran and his hotshot young partner whose reckless behavior stresses him out.

The hilariously mismatched pair shared biting repartee during dangerous altercations like chasing Padmé’s would-be assassin through the streets of Coruscant and “rescuing” Palpatine from the Separatists.
