After what has been a relatively short wait between games considering this is only the fourth for the franchise in seven years under the EA banner, Star Wars: Squadrons is here as a smaller, more experimental Star Wars game for fans to dive into. It is undoubtedly a dream come true for many fans, but that does not mean it is a completely perfect game, or even the best EA have produced for the brand.

The game has a few major flaws that cannot be ignored. However, it has more positives that will mean many fans who give the game a shot will love it and continue to play it for a good long while to come.

10 Best – Major Fun

First and foremost, there is absolutely no doubt how fun this game can be. Most Star Wars fans out there have thought about how fun it looks to fly about in the galaxy, and this game lets you know how satisfying it can be.

Jumping into the cockpit with your squadron and customized ships, going for broke against the enemy, strategizing and improving, these are all aspects of the game that, despite its difficulty, help the game be an incredibly enjoyable time.

9 Worst – Ranked Matches With Not Enough Players

Fleet Battles are ranked matches that help you level up, earn currency, and move up the rankings to the likes of Hero and Maverick— and for the games to actually get ranked, players must stay in the game for the whole time.

However, games see players leave too often so the game goes unranked, basically reducing the stakes to nothing. On top of that, many people have found themselves in lobbies with less than the ten players, putting their team at a major disadvantage— but still ranking the game. These are both major issues that surely will get addressed soon, but for now they put a damper on the online experience.

8 Best – Personal Preferences > Power

One of the best things the game manages to accomplish is a great balance. Teams will fail if they are all made up of one class of ship, individuals will fail the team if they do not balance attack and defense, and the various components for ships are all balanced.

When you apply a new component to one of the eight ships, it increases one attribute but will hurt another. That is a great thing as it means there is no progression towards insane power, but rather a slew of components that can get applied to loadouts leading to players getting their personal preference, having the ship with a playstyle that suits them and how they want to play the game.

7 Best – Challenging, But Rewarding

It is hard to imagine that anyone predicted just how difficult Squadrons would prove to be, being a game that is easy to jump in and play, but extremely hard to master.

There is a steep learning curve in the game, but going on that journey of improvement feels very rewarding. Going from dying at every turn, not having any strategies, losing games, and letting the team down in both game modes to knowing the roles of the ship, mastering the controls, knowing how to manage power, etc. is all gratifying, and a crucial part to the Squadrons experience.

6 Worst – Repetitive And Lacking In Variety

The game is comprised of a fifteen mission (including the prologue) campaign which takes around 6-8 hours; two multiplayer modes of Dogfight and Fleet Battles; Fleet Battles against the AI; and practice. On top of that, there only eight ships and six maps at this point.

Overall, that is not a whole lot, which is why the game comes at a reduced price tag (about $20 less than a regular, full-priced game). However, playing in the same ships on the same maps across the same two modes can get tiresome easily, even with the game being great fun— and this limited content will put many off the game.

5 Best – VR

On its own, this game is amazing for a specific audience overall. However, when you throw VR into the mix, this game becomes a whole other beast.

Admittedly, many people doing too many twists and turns at such a breakneck pace will result in nausea, but in all honesty, it is worth it for the experience the VR presents. It makes you feel like you are there in the cockpit, and if it is possible for you to get your hands on the technology, it is a must.

4 Worst – Presentation Of The Story

The campaign is well made, being the right length for its contained story, easing players into the basics and then more advanced maneuvers and controls of the game, and is gorgeous, with some fascinating characters and great cameos.

The Starhawk narrative is fun and interesting, but the story itself is a bit hollow and not very memorable. The biggest issue with the story, though, is its presentation. Neither of the player’s characters is given a name, just referred to as Vanguard Five or Titan Three. Characters talk at you with exposition. There are no replies to give. Everything is very impersonal and distant, and it leaves you wondering why you should care.

3 Best – Fully Immersive

Earlier on, VR got talked about as a way to truly feel a part of the Star Wars galaxy in a way that no other Star Wars game has managed to accomplish ever before.

However, even without VR, the game wholeheartedly delivered on being an immersive experience that allows its players, many of whom have dreamed about this game for years, to feel like pilots and to be in the cockpits flying their favorite iconic ships from the Empire and the New Republic.

2 Best – The Depth & Detail

One of the big reasons the game accomplishes this immersion so seamlessly is with the detail it provides. The game is narrow, but in that limited content, it runs deep.

The cockpit is filled to the brim with detail; every map is meticulously designed, every ship is on point, the controls are expertly and efficiently mapped out, the characters have a good amount of detail to them, and components and customizations for ships have a good amount of depth. Overall the game truly counters its repetitive nature by providing outstanding detail.

1 Both – Niche, Focused, And Not For Everyone

Squadrons is definitely a new kind of Star Wars game for EA to have produced. It is very focused, though its also not sure about what it is and what it is trying to accomplish and is the most niche Star Wars game in years.

This will be an absolute knockout for those in the fandom who love pilots, flight simulators, starships, and containment in their games. On the flip side, this game is not for everybody; many will dislike it even if they choose to play it, making Squadrons’ niche nature both one of its best and its worst qualities, depending on the player and what they’re looking for.
