New details about the setting and story of Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin have been revealed, and it seems that the main characters don’t belong in the dark world they’re currently inhabiting. Stranger of Paradise is an action RPG that is set in a world that is inspired by the original Final Fantasy.

The recently-released Stranger of Paradise demo takes place in a dungeon called the Chaos Shrine. This is also the name of the first dungeon in the original Final Fantasy. The two versions of the Chaos Shrine also share the same boss, as the evil Garland faces the party in both games. The Chaos Shrine also shares a lot of the same enemies in both games, as the player has to tackle goblins, skeletons, and wolves within its walls.

It’s clear that the world of Stranger of Paradise is meant to reflect the original Final Fantasy, but that’s not the case with its party. The self-proclaimed Warriors of Light are not who they say they are. The developers of Stranger of Paradise were recently interviewed in Famitsu (which has been translated into English by the official Square Enix website), and they discussed the setting of the game and the meaning of its title. According to creative producer Tetsuya Nomura, the titular “Stranger” references the main characters themselves. “Paradise” is the land where those characters aren’t supposed to be, as one of the meanings of the world is “land of the saved.”

It was also revealed that the Chaos Shrine is just one part of Stranger of Paradise, as fans had speculated that it would be the setting for the entire game. Stranger of Paradise isn’t directly connected to the world of the original Final Fantasy, so it’s not a direct sequel or an alternate reality. The clothing worn by Jack and his companions is also meant to indicate that they come from another world.

A lot of new information was divulged in the Famitsu interview. It seems that some of the speculations about the Trial Version were incorrect, and the scope of the game is a lot bigger than originally anticipated. Stranger of Paradise is still a while away from release in 2022, so the game could take on a very different form between now and then.
