What New Pokémon TCG Expansions Are Releasing In 2021

Over the years, the Pokémon Trading Card Game has released primary series and gradual expansions throughout the franchise’s lifespan. So far, the Pokémon TCG’s has gotten many expansions in 2021, and collectors and players alike might be wondering what is coming next. While the TCG’s popularity is still in full swing, The Pokémon Company has revealed plans for additional expansions to be released throughout the rest of 2021. The multiple expansions currently confirmed are based on the Sword and Shield games, but with the upcoming Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes, as well as Legends: Arceus in 2022, a new TCG series could be on the way as well.

Early 2021 saw a number of expansions, including Battle Styles, Chilling Reign, and Evolving Skies. Celebrations, which released in October, featured reruns of many famous and popular cards. Both Battle Styles and Chilling Reign TCG expansions focused on the DLC for Sword and Shield, while Evolving Skies leaned into Eeveelutions and Dragon types. Even though these card collections have finally caught up with Pokémon Sword and Shield’s development cycle, at least one more expansion is confirmed for 2021 so far.

The next expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card game is called Fusion Strike and will release in November 2021. Fusion Strike features Mew VMAX and a number of other enticing cards. Currently, the expansion is mostly sold out online (although restocks may occur closer to Fusion Strike’s release date). This is something that fans have, unfortunately, gotten used to as the pandemic has caused a rise in Pokémon card demand and this popularity (combined with scalpers) has caused shortages. Based on how the TCG usually releases sets, Fusion Strike will likely be the last expansion of the year. And with new games releasing, it may be the last TCG deck to be based on the Sword and Shield entries.

October Brought A Pokemon TCG Celebration For Card Collectors

The Pokémon Trading Card Game will only continue to see growth as the end of 2021 approaches, especially with the Celebrations expansion that was released in October. Celebrations promised to return to the classics, and emphasized the value of collections rather than introducing new powerhouses into the game. It features fewer cards than Evolving Skies because of this.

Celebrations also features 25 classic Pokémon TCG cards as remakes. This expansion is only available through special collections released periodically throughout October. Meanwhile, Fusion Strike is currently in pre-release through November 7 and has a full release on November 12, 2021. This expansion introduces the new Fusion Strike mechanic, which builds off the Rapid Strike and Single Strike cards introduced in Battle Styles that have since reappeared in Chilling Reign and Evolving Skies.

While most of the TCG’s final yearly expansions come out in November, the release of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl in November of 2021 could be accompanied with some cards, or even be the lead-in to a new Sinnoh series. Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which is set to release in early 2022, could also introduce a new series into the Pokémon TCG collections. While neither Nintendo nor The Pokémon Company has revealed any plans for further expansions this year, the release of two Pokémon games could be promising for future Pokémon TCG series and expansions.

Collectors and players of the Pokémon Trading Card Game have seen a number of great expansions throughout the course of 2021, and a potential new series with the release of the Sinnoh remakes in November and the Sinnoh prequel in early 2022 is exciting. While there is still time for The Pokémon Company to announce an additional card expansion, previous trends in Pokémon TCG releases suggest that receiving another expansion for the Pokémon Sword and Shield series is not likely. Despite this, with the news of the new Pokémon games, it’s unlikely that Pokémon Trading Card Game players and collectors will be short on content for very long.
