One of the most memorable scenes from Stranger Things season 1 is Joyce Byers communicating with her son, Will, through Christmas lights and the alphabet painted on the wall, but how was Will able to communicate through that? In just three seasons, Stranger Things has built its own mythology, but it has also left a lot of mysteries that viewers hope will be answered someday, and most of them are related to the Upside Down.

Season 1 was all about the disappearance of Will Byers, the dangerous experiments taking place at Hawkins Lab, and Eleven’s escape from it after accidentally opening a gate to another dimension. Will is the only person known to have survived various days in the Upside Down, but what makes his experience even more interesting and intriguing is that he was able to communicate with his mom through manipulating the lights in his house, even more after Joyce set up Christmas lights all over the house and over an alphabet painted on the wall.

The Upside Down is the biggest mystery in Stranger Things as no one knows how it works, its origin, and exactly how dangerous it can be (as mentioned above, Will survived a whole week there, but others haven’t been that lucky). What’s known about it is that it’s a copy of the human world, as it has the same locations and infrastructure, but it lacks any type of light, natural or artificial. The Byers’ house appeared exactly as it was when Will disappeared, meaning that the Christmas lights and the alphabet never appeared in the Upside Down version, so how was Will able to manipulate them to communicate with Joyce? Many fans have tried to figure it out, and it might be rooted in either psychic powers or magnetic fields.

Some have taken Eleven’s psychic abilities as a basis to explain how Will communicated through the lights. When she enters the void to find and communicate with others, the lights begin to flicker, meaning that her psychic powers have some effect on electromagnetic devices and light itself. Now, other theories suggest Will has powers of his own that he hasn’t really explored yet, and these could be psychic abilities. With that in mind, Will would have then “activated” a way of communication with the human world from the Upside Down through those powers, and the output were the lights at his house. It’s also possible that the one with a certain level of psychic abilities is Joyce, supported by how the telephone explodes after Will “calls” her. Again, the Christmas lights would be the output. Others suggest that Will, Joyce, and Jonathan have psychic powers, some more than others, as Jonathan recognized Joyce from across dimensions when she entered the Upside Down to rescue Will.

Another slightly simpler explanation is that anyone who goes through the gate gets magnetized. Mr. Clarke explains at some point that the gate would have a strong magnetic field, so it could be possible that anyone who crosses it is affected by it and so when they pass by anything electrical, the magnetic field is affected, thus the flickering lights. This is supported by how the lights reacted when the Demogorgon was around, though it doesn’t explain how Will would be able to communicate through the alphabet on the wall if it never appeared on the Upside Down’s version of his house. Stranger Things has a lot of questions to answer in season 4, and it’s unlikely it will offer a definitive answer to how Will communicated through the lights as there are bigger mysteries to address, but either of these explanations can offer some peace of mind.
