The head of Netflix has teased that Stranger Things spin-off series may be in the plans for the streamer. The massively popular sci-fi horror show debuted on Netflix in the Summer of 2016 and was met with instant success. With an ensemble cast including Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin, Stranger Things’ first season focused on the disappearance of young Will Byers after he is abducted by a monster from The Upside Down, known as the Demogorgon.
Seasons 2 and 3 of Stranger Things proved incredibly successful as well, adding new cast members while taking the action and mystery to new levels. The second season was mostly centered on the threats of the terrifying Mind Flayer. Season 3 saw the defeat of the Mind Flayer and ended on a huge cliffhanger, leaving police chief Jim Hopper’s fate unknown. After many delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, season 4 wrapped filming earlier this month. The marketing for the upcoming season has slowly but surely ramped up, with teasers revealing that Hopper survived, as well as serious trouble for Eleven (Brown), and a creepy new location. There has been no word yet on how many seasons Stranger Things will have, but there is news on what may come when the series wraps up its final season.
According to the co-CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, there may be more Stranger Things on the horizon in the form of spin-offs. As reported by Deadline, Sarandos teased that Stranger Things is a “franchise being born” and specifically hinted at spin-offs coming in the future. No details were provided on what the possible spin-offs would include or who would be starring in them, but Deadline reports there are talks of Millie Bobby Brown leading one of them.
It’s interesting that Sarandos teased “spin-offs,” meaning there will be more than one. It’s likely that if any spin-offs do emerge, then Millie Bobby Brown, who is arguably the series’ most popular character, will be at the forefront of one of them. However, having an ensemble cast and endless avenues for mystery and drama, there are a ton of possibilities for how Stranger Things can continue after the main series is complete.
There is definitely potential for both a prequel and a sequel series, which would open the door for brand-new characters as well as the return of current characters. Based on the colossal success that Stranger Things has seen since its premiere in 2016, whatever the creators and Netflix come up with will undoubtedly be a hit. The show has earned itself a die-hard fanbase that is sure to follow these characters and this story wherever it goes.
