Fans have wanted Kingdom Hearts to come to the Nintendo Switch for a long time. Once Melody of Memory was announced for Switch, rumors about a Kingdom Hearts HD Collection began making the rounds again on social media. However, thanks to a recent interview with series creator Tetsuya Nomura, it seems fans shouldn’t be holding their breath. Here’s why.
Since making its debut on the PS2, the Kingdom Hearts series has built a large and loyal following. This is thanks, in part at least, to the franchise’s ability to combine Final Fantasy’s characters and action-RPG combat with famous Disney properties. Somehow, a series that involves seeing FF8’s Squall conversing with Donald Duck has managed to not only work – but to be one of the most successful RPG franchises ever. So, it seems like with the immense popularity of the Switch, Kingdom Hearts would stand to make a bit more profit by releasing more games on the console.
A Kingdom Hearts collection on Nintendo Switch makes a lot of sense. After all, Kingdom Hearts games haven’t shied away from Nintendo before, with several spin-offs releasing on Game Boy Advance, DS, and 3DS over the years. The Switch seems like the perfect platform for finally bringing entries from the mainline series onto a Nintendo console. However, hopes of a Kingdom Hearts collection on Switch seems pretty much dashed now thanks to character designer and franchise director Tetsuya Nomura’s most recent statements.
Melody Of Memory May Be The Only Kingdom Hearts Game On Switch
According to Nomura, Melody of Memory is the last planned Kingdom Hearts game on Switch. The rhythm game is scheduled to release in November, and it looks like it will be the only Kingdom Hearts game to ever release on the console. This is because, according to Nomura, he and his team at Square Enix tried to find ways of bringing KH titles to Switch, but it was “technologically difficult.” That’s a bit vague, and it doesn’t really explain why the Switch couldn’t run the ports. Maybe it just didn’t make sense financially right now for Square Enix to bring more Kingdom Hearts games to Switch.
Nomura’s statements regarding Switch ports of Kingdom Hearts games, however, are still just vague enough that fans’ hopes shouldn’t be completely crushed. Still, it’s a major letdown for people who were hoping the release of Melody of Memory in November was going to be the first of many Kingdom Hearts games on Switch. There’s also an upside to all of this. Nomura said he thinks the Switch is an intriguing piece of hardware and would like more of his games to come to the console in the future.
Kingdom Hearts has gone off in some odd directions before, so if sales for Melody of Memory are good on Switch, more games in the series may be possible. For now, though, it looks like Melody of Memory may be the first (and only) Kingdom Hearts game to ever arrive on the Nintendo Switch.
