Succession Season 3 Episode 2 Winners & Losers Who Came Out On Top

In Succession season 3, episode 2, the Roy family and their loyal (and not-so-loyal) inner-circle, continue to jockey for power – here’s who came out on top as winners and who ended the episode as the losers. The Succession season 3 premiere picked up in the immediate aftermath of Kendall’s press conference as Logan’s former “Number One Boy” staved off an anxiety attack in an empty bathtub. Kendall quickly put himself together, but he still seemed to be on shaky ground.

When meeting with those he wanted to be on his team, including Succession’s newest high-powered lawyer, Lisa Arthur (Sanaa Lathan), Ken seemed more focused on his Twitter account than taking down his father’s toxic empire. Logan was ready to go “full f**king beast” by the end of the episode, portending bad things for the world’s worst middle child and Succession episode 2 follows through on that promise.

Kendall brings together the rest of the Roy siblings – Shiv, Connor, and Roman – at his ex-wife’s apartment. While there, he tries to convince them to abandon their father and side with him in the Roy civil war, but he ultimately fails in doing so, unable to navigate their unique demands. By the end of the episode, it seems no progress has been made and Kendall is as isolated as ever. Here are the winners and losers of Succession season 3, episode 2.

Shiv

Shiv may have spent most of the episode dodging her father’s calls, but by the end of the episode, she’s back in Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) good graces. Not only was she able to maintain neutrality throughout the entire conversation with her siblings, but she her true feelings about the situation with Kendall still remain a mystery – both to audiences and those in the inner-circle. While it seems like she’s angry at Ken for what he’s done (and for nabbing Lisa as his lawyer), she seems to be the most calm and collected of all the Roys.

Logan

Logan spends much of Succession episode 2 trying to find his children, but he still ends up a winner of this episode. Without lifting a finger, Logan manages to keep Shiv, Roman, and Connor all on his side. He also manages to woo Marcia back into the inner-circle after their tumultuous split at the end of Succession season 2. Through sheer force of will, Logan seems to be holding it all together despite the many forces at work trying to bring him down, further proving that the corporate titan cannot be so easily shaken.

Connor Roy

It’s not often that Connor Roy gets described as a winner – the most out-of-the-loop Roy sibling in Succession, Connor is often relegated to the sidelines when it comes to the big power plays. This time, though, Connor manages to avoid disaster by being the first of Kendall’s siblings to deny his proposal to team up. Kendall is desperate enough to accept Connor’s support at any time and it seems that the eldest Roy knows that. Connor’s decision at the end of Succession episode 2 keeps him on Logan’s side, while also keeping his options open.

Marcia

Logan Roy’s estranged wife, Hiam Abbass’ Marcia, was missing at the end of Succession season 2, after confronting her husband’s fixation with Holly Hunter’s Rhea Jarrell. Logan needs her back, not only for personal support but for the optics as well. Luckily, she’s more than willing to fly out to Sarajevo to meet him and she brings along with her a list of demands that must be met, if she is to comply. While it’s not made clear just what she wants, it’s hinted that it is an exorbitant amount of money, and, by the end of the episode, it’s clear that Marcia gets what she wants.

Stewy & Sandy

Stewy and Sandy are still hoping to take over WayStar Royco and they’re just two of the people Kendall is trying to woo in Succession episode 2. Their position remains rather nebulous, and Sandy doesn’t even appear in the episode. Instead his daughter, Sandi (played by Hope Davis, a new member of the Succession season 3 cast), appears alongside Stewy, and they both seem to decide to keep their options open. They don’t want to attach themselves to Kendall, who may or may not be a sinking ship. Stewy also gets one of the best visual gags of the episode when he sends Kendall a giant Trojan Horse, a nod to the fact that the unrest Kendall has caused at WayStar Royco is the perfect vehicle to their covert takeover of the company.

Losers of “Mass in Time of War”

Kendall

Kendall is still riding the high of his Logan betrayal, despite the fact that the Succession premiere hinted at a Kendall tragedy. It seems like reality may finally be settling for Kendall in at the end of Succession episode 2, though. Abandoned by Connor, Shiv, and Roman, Ken is left with no direct family support. Greg, Kendall’s closest ally at the beginning of Succession season 3, is also out to protect his own skin before he decides on his next move. This leaves Kendall with few options. Where he goes from here is anybody’s guess, but at least he has Sanaa Lathan’s Lisa Arthur on his side.

Greg

Greg seems primed to become a winner of Succession season 3, episode 2. Upon leaving Kendall’s ex-wife’s apartment, he seems to convincingly tell Tom that he has yet to pick a side. Things quickly go downhill from there: Cousin Greg’s tenuous grasp on the legal system leads him to enlist a first year law student for advice, as he is bombarded by a WayStar Royco lawyer. Things seem to be looking up when he gets together with his grandfather and Logan’s brother, Ewan (James Cromwell). Ewan promises Greg that he will back his grandson, and he brings him to see a lawyer, who quickly proves that he may not be the most competent soldier in the Roy civil war.

Roman & Gerri

Like Greg, Roman and Gerri, Succession’s oddest couple, seem like they could come out on top. Gerri begins the episode as WayStar Royco’s new CEO and with Roman as her closest ally, she has direct family support. Ultimately, though, as revealed at the end of Succession episode 2, Gerri is meant to be nothing more than a shield. This complicates things with Roman and could send him on a path to betray his father. Roman clearly cares for Gerri, even if he is reticent to admit it. With Logan setting her up to take the fall for whatever he has up his sleeve, the new CEO may have a bigger storm coming than she could imagine.
