Scrubs: 5 Reasons Elliot Was Perfect For J.D. (& 5 Reasons He Should Have Been With Someone Else)

Of all television romances, few were as sweet as that of J.D. and Elliot on Scrubs. Elliot was perfect for J.D. and in some ways, not. Take a look.

Of all the endgame television romances, few were as sweet and well-plotted as that of J.D. and Elliot on Scrubs. Lovingly portrayed by Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke, the pair of doctors had a fun will-they-won’t-they, on-again, off-again relationship at Sacred Heart.

But the question must be asked: was Elliot the perfect match for J.D.? Or was there someone else in the history of Scrubs who would have been a more romantic pairing with the lead doctor?

10 Elliot: They Actually Are Perfect For Each Other

One strong piece of evidence that J.D. and Elliot are perfect for one another is that they literally talk about the idea that they are perfect for one another. In the season six finale, “My Point of No Return,” J.D. and Elliot’s respective relationships with Kim and Keith is the start of their downfall.

And it all comes from a heart to heart conversation between J.D. and Elliot, after which they almost kiss. But part of this conversation was J.D. saying, “You ever think maybe we’re perfect for each other?” Strong evidence.

9 Someone Else: J.D. And Elliot Tried Already

On TV comedies, relationships can start with passion and flame out for years before being reignited. Ross and Rachel spend years apart from each other on Friends, Jeff and Annie flirt for six seasons on Community. And the same was true of Scrubs.

J.D. and Elliot tried the whole “dating” thing and it ended poorly. Only on television can a relationship like this survive for years and start again with no animosity. In real life, these kinds of romances are rare. Maybe they both would be better off finding someone new.

8 Elliot: Kim Lied To J.D.

It is not good that a reason for Elliot to be with J.D. comes from the actions of another woman, but they are severe actions that are worth considering. When J.D. and Kim had a surprise pregnancy together, Kim lied to J.D. about the health of the fetus.

Lying to someone about his baby is a no holds barred dealbreaker, for sure. Say what you will about Elliot, but she would have never done that.

7 Someone Else: Daydreaming

Is J.D. an idiot? This is a question asked by Dr. Kelso. He responds, “No, sir, I’m a dreamer.” One of the hallmarks of J.D.’s characterization is his proclivity for daydreaming and fantasizing. This is a quality not regularly embodied by Elliot, but it seems like a crucial one for understanding J.D.

Julie, however, who had extreme chemistry with J.D. (and was played by Mandy Moore) tended to experience fantasies, as well. This seems like soul mate material.

6 Elliot: Love Above Turk

Throughout the eight seasons of Scrubs (the ninth was a spin-off, to be honest), one love that does not falter is the love between J.D. and Turk. This is a bond so strong that J.D. never puts a woman he dates above Turk.

That is until season eight comes around and the Scrubs crew travels to the Bahamas. While there with Elliot, J.D. waxes poetic about their love before telling her that he loves her more than Turk. There is no coming back from that. That is the equivalent of an unbreakable vow.

5 Someone Else: Immense Chemistry

Speaking of characters who had immediate chemistry with J.D., few were as strong a match as Kim. Played by Elizabeth Banks, many in the Scrubs fandom were eager to see her with J.D., had she had not lied about her pregnancy.

That does not take away from their chemistry, however. It was a joy to watch Kim and J.D. on screen together and it helped many feel that he did not necessarily need to have an endgame with Elliot.

4 Elliot: Friendship First

However, no chemistry was as strong as that which was between J.D. and Elliot. Sarah Chalke was not just an actor who appeared for a couple of episodes or an arc here and there. She was a focal point of the show and one of the comedy’s most important characters.

As such, she was able to develop a strong foundation of friendship with J.D. before they took things to the next level. On television, the strongest chemistry and the best relationships always come from people who are friends first.

3 Someone Else: Alex Misses Him

J.D. and Alex would not necessarily be a better couple than J.D. and Elliot. After all, Alex’s drug addiction seemed to put an end to any romantic dalliances, even though J.D. did what he could to help her. But these two also had a chemistry that percolated beneath the show all the way to the finale.

When J.D. leaves Sacred Heart, a vision of Alex walks by and she tells J.D. she misses him. That means that she truly does miss him or J.D. still thinks about her subconsciously. Either way, it shows there’s still sparks.

2 Elliot: The Love Of His Life

J.D. and Elliot did date before they eventually broke up, came back together, and cemented their love for the rest of their lives. One cannot forget how broken up J.D. was initially, though, when they were no longer together.

At one point, Sean, a nemesis of J.D.’s (“Nobody cares, Sean”), is kissing Elliot in full view of J.D. So goes the exchange, “You’ve got something on your face” and “What?” J.D. responds, “The love of my life.” It’s played for laughs, but it’s a moment of truth. J.D. and Elliot are truly the loves of each other’s lives.

1 Someone Else: The Turk Of It All

Kim, Alex, Julie, Elliot. They are all strong characters and J.D. would be lucky to be romantically involved with any of them. However, they all distract from the clear match that is better than all the rest: Christopher Turk.

The love between J.D. and Turk is palpable, from snuggling to being “a little married” to guy love. These are undeniable signs of chemistry between the two. Maybe J.D. did not need any of the aforementioned characters. Maybe he just needed Turk.
