Summer in Mara – from developer and publisher Chibig – doesn’t release until next week, but in anticipation of its launch, a brand-new trailer has been released showcasing elements from the game’s story-driven single-player campaign.

Until now, we’ve really only seen the more light-hearted scenes from the charming farming, crafting, and exploration adventure in which players take on the role of Koa, an energetic and curious little girl who is always up for an adventure. We’ve seen the sunny beaches, the adorable farms, interesting looking characters, and the beautiful waves from the sea, but the new story trailer gives off a bit of a different tone.

The trailer kicks off with Koa floating in a dream-like state, with a voiceover asking if she “remembers the story of the Guardians.” Brief scenes featuring silhouettes of Koa and other characters are then shown, as the voiceover continues to describe the Guardians’ role, which was to be the keepers of the ocean and “the Door.”

From there, gameplay footage is shown off. However, this time around, Koa is seen running through less islandy areas of Mara with broken windows and dead vegetation, a spacey/sci-fi setting with what looks like a volcano in the distance, and an arctic ocean setting, in which a massive robot appears to be frozen in an iceberg. There are, however, still beautiful environments that Koa will end up exploring, such as a deep-sea dive through a coral reef.

Ominous music elevates the mystery, as do the shadowy depictions of some mysterious characters that Koa will likely encounter.

The trailer ends asking, “Will the Door ever open?” It then ends showing Koa sitting among a flurry of colors and mysterious shapes before cutting to the title of the game with a handful of Ghibli-style creatures (presumably the Guardians).

Clearly, there will be more than meets the eye to Summer in Mara when the game releases next week for PC and Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned to TheGamer for our review of the game!
